Tatsuki's Physical

Nov 20, 2005 18:53

Tatsuki rolled her still tender shoulder as she strolled down the school halls towards Unohana's infirmary. She was long overdue for her physical and could do with some polysporin or something for the road rash on her back.

She sighed mentally as she reached the correct door. She hated physicals. The poking and prodding really annoyed her, but if she wanted to keep her spot on her teams, she needed to make sure she was in top shape. Sucking up her nerve, she rapped sharply on the door with the back of her fist.

Unohana turned from her computer at the knock and swiftly went to the door. She hadn't been expecting anything this period and hoped there hadn't be an accident. Opening the door, she was relieved to find that it was just Arisawa-san, looking perfectly healthy if a bit sore. "Hello Arisawa-san."

"Hey Doc." She answered with a slight grin and wave, stepping into the office. "Is this a bad time? I think I have tomorrow's lunch period free if that would be better..." Tatsuki looked around slightly, both relieved and disapointed to find the room empty of other patients.

"It's been quiet today, which is a relief. Much as I love my job, I prefer when there are no patients." Strolling to desk, Unohana sorted through the meticulously organized student files until she found Tatsuki's, deducing that the girl was here for a physical. "This period is fine, I know you're busy and rather get it over with. Why don't you take a seat?" The nurse nodded towards the two cots and several chairs arranged invitingly at one side of the office.

"Uh, yeah." Tatsuki ran her hand through her short dark hair, mussing it as she moved over to one of the cots and sat down, knees wide, elbows resting on them as she hunched forward.

"Thanks for seeing me." She said sincerely with a lop-sided smile.

"Thank you for coming, I'm sure it wasn't something you were looking forward to." Taking a seat, Unohana opened the folder and quickly scanned the contents. "This is your first school physical, correct?"

"Yes ma'am. My family doctor's on vacation right now." She answered easily propping her chin in one of her hands.

"I see." Unohana skimmed through several pages before speaking again. "Have you suffered any injuries in the past year?" Many students involved in athletics were prone to injury and Arisawa-san seemed to be no exception

Her eyes rolled up, mentally counting and recalling them all. "I broke my arm, twisted my ankle, fractured my wrist...aside from that, just a lot of bruises and scrapes." Tatsuki answered, voice distracted. "Oh! I fractured a rib too." She added with a snap of her fingers.

"That's quite a list you have there. Did everything heal without any complications?" The nurse asked, jotting down the various injuries in the foldier. She was beginning to see why Arisawa's doctor was on vacation.

"Pretty much." She answered easily. "My wrist gets a little sore when its raining, but it's been steadily going away."

"May I take a look at it?" Unohana asked, leaning forward a bit.

"Yeah, sure." Tatsuki responded quickly, sitting up and extending her left wrist.

Handling the wrist gently, the nurse slowly massaged it, saying at the same time "Tell me whenever there's any pain."

As the nurse's finger pressed into the hollow where her wrist connected to her thumb, Tatsuki winced slightly. "That spots a little tender." She admitted a little reluctantly.

Unohana nodded and took a small vial of medicinal oil from her pocket, dabbing a bit on the spot and then massaged around the spot gently. After several minutes, the nurse stopped and held out the bottle to the girl. "You've been straining your wrist too much. Use this every day for several minutes and it should stop feeling so sore." she instructed

"Thanks." Tatsuki answered, lop-sided smile playing on her lips once more as she accepted the bottle and slipped it into her backpack that rested at her feet.

Several minutes passed as the nurse began the routine compentents of a physcial, taking Arisawa-san's pulse, height, and weight, performing a quick sensory test and checking her reflexes. All this passed quickly, without only some quiet instructions from Unohana. "Do you want me to perform a breast exam?" she asked, after the basic checks were finished.

Tatsuki felt the color start to creep warmly up her neck but she ruthlessly pushed it back done. "I...suppose if its really necessary..." She said hesitantly, really hoping it wasn't.

"If you preform a self-examination regularly and haven't noticed anything unusual, it won't be necessary but otherwise, I'd prefer if I checked, just in case." The nurse answered, injecting a bit of sympathy into her voice.

Tatsuki's brows furrowed slightly, had she done a breast exam recently? Well, she washed them everday and never noticed anything...did that count? Probably not.

"I guess I'm due." She finally pushed passed her stiff jaw as she reached for the hem of her shirt. "Do I need to lie down?"

"That's not necessary, just lift your shirt up and I'll take a look. Do you know how to do a self-examination already or would you like me to go over that?" Standing up, Unohana waited patiently for a response before doing anything.

"Nah, I know how. I just forget to." She admitted as she puller her just-this-side of threadbare t-shirt up and over her head.

"Please keep it in mind then. I don't want to have to tell Kotetsu-sensei to bring it up in Health class." Stepping in front of Tatsuki, the nurse gently checked for any suspicious lumps or other irregularities and then declared the girl perfectly healthy.

"Yeah, I hear she's kinda sqeemish." Tatsuki agreed as she pulled her shirt back on, shifting it until it settled properly on her shoulders.

"Teaching health class to a group of high schoolers is distinctly different from graduate school. She'll adjust in time." Seating back down, Unohana gestured for Tatsuki to take a seat, before opening up the file again and taking out a pencil. "I just have several questions before you leave."

Tatsuki sat again, crossing her feet under her, indian style. "Shoot." She answered, propping her chin in her palm once more as her elbow rested on her knee.

The nurse leaned back and glanced down at the several sheets of paper before speaking. "Have you taken any recreational drugs before or used steriods?"

"Absoloutely not." Tatsuki answered firmly, expression completely serious.

Observing Arisawa's expression, Unohana nodded, and moved onto the next questions. "What about sexual intercourse?"

"Nope. Even if I were interested in having it, my parents keep way too short a leash on me to allow for the opportunity." She answered with a bland shrug.

"You'll be glad of that later" the nurse commented, doubting that the girl would believe her. "Any illnesses in the past year?"

Tatsuki shrugged again, she was barely interested in guys, let alone that interested. "Uhh...I caught the flu last fall, but that's all." She answered, rubbing her forehead slightly.

"Is something wrong?" Unohana asked in concern, noticing the motion.

"Huh?" She asked, looking up in surprise. "Oh no, I just tend to do that when I'm trying to remember something." Tatsuki explained, a little embarrassed as she scratched the back of her head.

"I see. Well, if you are in any pain, tell me and I'll get you something to relieve it" she answered, putting slight emphasis on the word 'any.'

"I'll be sure to let you know." She answered with a half-grin, letting her hand fall into her lap. "Thanks."

"I don't have any more medical questions for you but I was wondering if you'd noticed anything strange going on which any of your friends, particularly Kurosaki-san and Inoue-san?" Unohana noticed that there were several minutes left in the period and decided to make the best of them, in keeping up with the intricate high school ongoings

Tatsuki looked out the window of Unohana's office, staring out at the sky as her expression fell into a blank slate. "I feel like I missed something, when it comes to them." She answered, honest in her emotion, though just as ambiguous as her knowledge was.

"I'm sure that your friends will come to you if they have any problems; it'll just take time. You might want to talk to them privately if you're concerned" Unohana suggested, sympathesizing with Tatsuki's situation.

"I've tried. I'm not very good with words, unfortunately." She admitted, turning away from the window and hunching over, elbows on her knees and eyes on the floor.

"The words you use aren't as important as the emotion behind them. Kurosaki-san and Inoue-san both understand you very well" Looking at Tatsuki, Unohana wondered if she should investigate the matter further. It certainly was taking its toll on the usually vibrant sophomore

"I know...It's more that I can't understand them. Like they've outgrown me or something." She admitted with a forced laugh.

"That would never happen. You're one of the most mature young adults I've had the pleasure of meeting Arisawa-san" the nurse replied, trying to lift the girl's spirits.

"Thanks doc, I'm flattered you think so." Tatsuki said, meeting Unohana's eyes as her lips pulled up slightly in the corner.

"It's true" she smiled, standing up just as the bell rang. "Well, you'd better get to class, Arisawa-san. Thank you for stopping by."

"Thanks for checking me out Doc...and listening to me." She added with a half smile before ducking out the door and heading to chemistry.
