Just finished reading the Hunger Games trilogy and feel the need to review or, at least, talk about it for the benefit of the great anonymous internet. Personally, I enjoyed the series, but not nearly as much as you... it seems. To me, the first book was by far the most riveting. The second one was relatively good, and the last faltered a bit. Possibly the only redeeming quality to the last book was the proverbial wrench thrown into the works a la Peeta's brainwashing. Overall, the romance aspect of the books was my least favorite part of the series. The whole love triangle drew some unfavorable comparisons with the Twilight series and although I've always been a fan of Peeta's, I gotta say that he was just too perfect. So perfect that it was just so hard to believe such a character exists.

Oh yeah, and I fucking despised being trapped in Katniss' head. Holy shit, although admirable at times, I just couldn't development any real fondness for our protagonist. She just seemed so unlikable. Now if we could get in Haymitch's head, that'd be a real treat... but then again, part of his appeal is the mystery surrounding his thought processes and all those damn times he surprised the shit ( ... )

I liked the second book most; it combined the best amount of action, surprises, and emotional struggle for my preference. The third went a lot too far incorporating these themes, (at times it felt like I was reading an actual war novel, like Pat Barker's Regeneration, but I'm not that big on heavy militaristic narratives), and the first one not enough (approaching something close to boring and predictable). Plus, Katniss was just goddamn stupid in the first one lol ( ... )
