One post is really not enough to cover one's experiences at the Western tip of San Francisco. There's the end of Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, the Cliff House, and - the real reason I went out there - the ruins of the Sutro Baths.
Interesting! Love the panorama montage at the end.
It really looks very remote. You indicate in your previous entry that you went there using public transportation. About how far is this from the centre of SF and how long does it take you to get there?
who goes to the municipal pools now? *raises hand* I know the (rhetorical) question wasn't aimed at people living on different continents. But I still wanted to mention that here it's still very uncommon to have your own pool.
Ooh! I really meant to reply to your comment long before now. Pardon my delay, I blame it on school!
So, wow, I'm glad you like the post... but it's really not THAT remote. San Francisco is really only 49 square miles (about 127 sq kilometers according to my conversion tool), so nothing is very remote. However, we are really lucky to have a lot of everything in this very small place. There are even micro-climates with some areas getting misty rain while another part of town is bright and sunny.
Our bus system is pretty good and can get you just about anywhere. From the middle of San Francisco (say, the Union Square district) one can take the number 38 bus and be at the Cliff House in about an hour and 15 minutes (depending on what time of day it is of course.)
Oh, and about the swimning pools... it's not so much that people have their own pools here (there really isn't enough room for that), as it is about people's phobias about "public" pools. They will be happy to spend a good sized fee at a fancy gym and use that pool
