George describes some proto-spiritual experiences as a child in "I, Me, Mine" but in interviews, he talks about how before LSD, all he cared about was playing rock'n roll and a good shag. It strikes me that he seemed awfully open to the message and that the love of gardening and nature predates the LSD, so I think George's spiritual bent was waiting to be evoked.
Since he got the house in '64 and had the pool built after that and since he had the LSD in early '65, the odds are good that the algae incident followed his exposure to LSD (but the inclination was probably there all along, waiting to be brought out).
