Are cynics just living in a reality with the volume turned up or are they idealists who have been disappointed?

Maybe cynics are idealists who are cowed by the reality that they will fail and they will be wrong, and so will everyone else, so they choose to deride... like they drift towards the nihilistic edge and realize it's all not really worth it, but for whatever reason, refuse to completely submerge themselves in those more turbid waters.
