My life/style is weird sometimes

So I got into yet another conversation yesterday that began with me saying I'm vegan and like baking a lot and her responding "Oh I could never give up meat, it's a good source of protein, it's tasty, etc etc..."

After we parted ways it really made me think of the myriad conversations like that I've had in my life.  And, I guess, especially so in ( Read more... )

I don't think you should feel your lifestyle is weird just because you are vegan. It takes a lot of discipline to be vegan. Some people feel the need to defend their choices, which is okay, you don't need to argue with them.

sometimes it's okay if a conversation gets hijacked from its original path, but if you feel like it's become an over-and-over hijacking in the same direction, I can see how that can become dull after a while.

Indeed, "I wish to call your identity and/or your life choices into question" is an appropriate topic for friendly conversation only in rare circumstances.

It is really exhausting sometimes! Luckily most of my friends either are vegan or veg or were in the past, or have known other vegans/vegetarians before so I never deal with that anymore. The last time I had someone try to discuss/argue with me about it was a few months ago when I was getting a falafel sandwich at Pita Pit. It's very frustrating to be forced to justify yourself just to get some food! Some people are legitimately curious because it's new to them and that's cool, but others are just really defensive about it as if your choice is a personal attack on them. Also the endless questions from people trying to prove you wrong or something ie. "Would you eat meat in this situation". Very annoying after a while. The funniest thing about that, I think, is that guaranteed those are the people who claim to dislike vegans/vegetarians for being preachy.
