I've recently been hearing rumors that Tivo is not going to exist for much longer. I don't know how true that is, but I am looking into this as a replacement option. It's quite pricey, yes...but I think it'll last considerably longer than 3 years.

While that unit seems cool in many regards, and actually costs less than what I'm considering, it seems to be lacking in a key feature: CableCard. With its support for CableCard, the new Tivo HD would allow me to get the HD picture from my cable company and record it on my Tivo. Without it, even if a DVR is capable of recording 1080, there would not be an HD signal for it to record. That's probably my primary reason for wanting a Tivo HD; otherwise, I could still just use their Series 2.

Ah, in that case, it might be worth contacting the makers and asking if they plan or can offer support for CableCard.
