Temptation

Am struggling to resist the temptation to buy an iPod Touch...... See I kinda like the iPhone and those of it's ilk - would be nice to be able to access t'internet on the move, without having to lug a laptop/netbook type thing around, but most of these large screen internet capable phones require either using O2 (iPhone), or having a high monthly ( Read more... )

...on my mother's Acer Aspire 1 netbook. It's the dog's danglies, I'm hugely impressed! Decent keyboard, tiny, light and can do everything you might want to do on the internet, and basic lightweight computing tasks as well (I stuck Thunderbird, Firefox & Open Office onto this one and it is perfectly happy). An Ipod touch would be smaller, but tiny screens and no keyboard do not a happy surfing experience make...

I've played with a few internet enabled phones and the problem seems to be that they are rubbish net devices and awful phones. Good in both roles in extremis but a PITA to live with...

I did also consider a netbook - given you can get them for about the same price as the Touch - I'm just concerned they wouldn't really stand up to a gym environment.... and I know at the gym, an mp3 player just doesn't cut it for me for reducing boredom, I need something that provides more entertainment than that ;p

If I'm honest, it's not often I'm away from the house, but the few times I am - especially on the train down to London, I've found myself wishing I had something small and portable that was internet capable.... but like you - have not been overly impressed by what I have observed of internet capable phones...

Hmm... well, on a train, or in a Starbucks, or indeed anywhere else away from a PC, I think that a netbook is the answer for net access and email on the go. For gym entertainment? Hmm... if an MP3 player isn't enough, how about a tranny or a DAB radio so that you can listen to something more cerebral than music. Or you could download podcasts to listen to in the gym on your MP3 player.

Can you really use something portable you can see moving pictures on in the gym while you are actually e.g. pounding it out on a treadmill?

Not on a treadmill no.... but some of the other machines like the bikes and crosstrainers in particular you can quite happily do something else other than listen/watch.

And yeah, would agree that most applications other than the gym, the netbook prob has the edge - although the other downside to those over something like the Touch would be the requirement for a larger handbag..... Which given I just treat myself to a new one, is probably not something I want to have to buy.... as my current one has all sorts of useful pockets for squirrelling away small tech in :-)
