Speaking as someone who writes this stuff for a living, I found Joomla incredibly unintuitive to get to grips with. WordPress is much easier, but doesn't have the sophistication.
Our own CMS does all of this out of the box, but sadly is not free :)
Would be interested to know the cost of yours for reference/interest. The club is not expecting stuff for free, so some outlay in the name of ease of setup/use is something that could be considered :-)
Useful info. Am starting to lean more towards Wordpress, if I can find a decent book on it that doesn't go on and on about creating an *awesome* blog - LOL.
I still think both of the admin areas for both Joomla and Wordpress could make things so much easier to understand than they do.
Good luck! Btw one other thought. If you find yourself considering modifying a plugin, i.e. writing PHP, then stop. Look for another plugin that already does what you want, how you want it. If there isn't one, question whether you really need the feature...I went through 3 document archive plugins but did eventually find the one which ticked my boxes.
But there didn't seem to be any way to allow multiple user accounts with the same email address. In the end I decided it wasn't a killer and I could live without it.

I totally agree, both are pretty fiddly to use and could be improved. But they are free, and really very good considering.
