My advice? Hold off on the iPad/laptop/whatever, and run off to Southeast Asia. Money spent on experiences is always more worthwhile than money spent on things. Besides, SE Asia is awesome for travel!

While I'd love to run off, I lack the cash, the vacation time, and the passport to do so right now; I value experiences over objects myself, but I do genuinely need a portable device to edit photos to continue pursuing the business that allows me to travel -- if I can't edit on the road, I can't work. So I wish I could take your advice, but for now, a device has to come first. :)
