The motives of friendship are not, cannot be, easy to be define. That is assuming that motives are constant across all individual minds, which is a lovely lie. It has confused me, this give/take thing. I guess one useful rule of thumb here is that those who desire life lose it, while those who 'despise' life gain it (to paraphrase). Although friendships are about taking just as much as about giving, one must learn to 'ignore' the taking (appreciating it as a privilege rather than an entitlement) and enjoy the giving...

But I don't really agree that everyone wants friends for very different reasons. Deep down, we're all just lonely, and we want friends to mend our attention deficits.
