I wrote a long email to my satc-obssessed friend detailing my thoughts about the movie, so I might as well use an edited version of that as a substitute for actually blogging...

I definitely didn't buy the Steve plot - I thought it was very unlike him to cheat. Still, I wanted Miranda to take him back - regardless of whether it was realistic or not. Their reunion in the sixth season, however, was much more satisfying and romantic. The reunion on the Brooklyn Bridge just seemed forced.

It didn't feel like Sex and the City until they arrived in Mexico, and it's ridiculous that they had to leave the city to make it seem like Sex and the CITY. Charlotte seemed very Charlotte-like there, and I liked Carrie's little "Mexi-coma" joke. But the voice-over was silly. I felt like the screenwriters were treating us like idiots. For example, Miranda tells Carrie that she'll laugh when something's really funny. So she laughs when Charlotte has her little accident...and then Carrie points it out in the voice-over!! In the show, Carrie made silly, sometimes corny, little jokes in the voice-over, but it was cute and I felt like it added something to the show. In the movie, Carrie just pointed out what was already obvious onscreen.

It was pretty depressing. It lacked a lot of the charm of the show. They didn't even talk about sex. Samantha's sushi scene, however, was funny. And Charlotte's "I curse the day you were born!" thing was really funny too. I thought Charlotte seemed the most like herself in the movie. But I really didn't care that she had a baby.

I loved the New Year's Eve scene - when Carrie shows up at Miranda's apartment. It was one of the few expressions of affection in the film that didn't involve anything material. But more on that later.

I loved Carrie and Big's reunion in the closet. However, I hated that they got married. Carrie asks Big: "why did we ever decide to get married in the first place?" and then they got married anyway?! I thought the closet reunion was a perfect ending. (I thought the ending of the show was better, but it was fine for the movie.)

My main problem with it was that it felt like a cheap imitation of sex and the city. it's like they took all the things they THOUGHT people loved about sex and the city (shoes, clothes, cosmos) and made those things more important than they really are. i mean, fashion was a big part of the show, but it was a FUN part of the show - the movie seemed to be telling us fancy things can actually change your life. I felt like every time someone wanted to express their love for another person, they gave them something really expensive and these moments were supposed to be really poignant. at one point I felt like I was watching a commercial for louis vuitton bags.

anyway, I choose to believe satc ended four years ago.
