CANON: Baccano!
CANON REFERENCE: Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Baccano!_characters#Martillo_family
The article is rather short, so there's more information to be found in this short, translated passage from one of the light novels: http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Baccano:Volume9_Intro1
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL: HS-2 11th grade
ENROLLMENT: Wealthy family

APPEARANCE: Firo is short (probably in the range of 5' 4-6", significantly shorter than most boys and not much taller than most girls. ) and young looking for his age, described as having a "baby face," or even as looking a bit like a girl. While he's decently strong, he has a wiry, slight build. His hair is light brown and slightly unkempt. He has a fair complexion and brown eyes. Firo doesn't put a lot of effort into his appearance: his clothes are chosen for comfort rather than style and are generally casual, like a t-shirt and jeans.

PERSONALITY:
On the surface, Firo is a gregarious youth who, though a little rude in his bluntness, is easy to talk to and befriend. Danger's frequent appearance in his life allows him to approach it with a cool head and a smirk on his face. Always willing to lend a hand, Firo frequently sticks his nose in situations that are none of his business. Combined with his bluntness and enjoyment of mocking people, this tendency gets him into some sticky siuations, especially when dealing with unsavory folks. But Firo is confident in his fighting skills to get him out of dangerous situations. After all, he's honed them with great dedication for years.

After spending years starved for company, Firo enjoys making friends, and is typically friendly when encountering strangers. That is, unless they manage to make a bad impression. Firo is quick to judge and will let people he dislikes know exactly how he feels about them. Firo's bluntness extends even to people he likes, but in those cases it's not usually intended as rudeness, merely observation that he refuses to sugarcoat. With especially close friends, he's gentler with their feelings and loathe to criticize. His views of people close to him can be easily warped by love and trust, and he misses or ignores flaws in their character. Once someone is friends with Firo, he cares about them and remains loyal through thick and thin.

His friendliness seems to set him far apart from the miserable and unsmiling child he was before meeting his family, but his old self surfaces in some ways. Firo is not shy about his belief in the harshness of the world. The school of hard knocks drilled that notion too far into his head for him to let go of it easily. Death is no stranger in Firo's life; he watched his mother die and lived in violent areas. His method of coping is to claim the dead no longer matter and to attempt to forget about them- though he finds that difficult to do. While he's often foolishly trusting- due to stupidity rather than faith in humanity - he's always prepared to protect himself from physical attack and typically is overzealous in his "self-defense."

Firo is not the brightest of people, and he has no problem acknowledging that. As mentioned before, his trust in strangers comes mostly from Firo not bothering to assess risks in the situation and generally being impulsive. It is very easy to confuse Firo, and when he's confused he often gets headaches. He is curious, but only curious enough to pepper people with questions; when it comes to doing the research himself, he lacks motivation. As such, his worldly knowledge is sorely lacking. He only has extensive knowledge on things he's interested in, so most of what he knows are fighting techniques, which he picks up quickly. Most everything else goes in one ear and out the other, or, if it does stick, is soon forgotten. He can cram for a test if given proper motivation, but the information doesn't linger in his brain for long.

For Firo, the wishes of his family are the best motivation one can give him. They are the people who make him happy, so he's determined to make them happy in return. More than anything, he wants to join them as a full member of the Camorra and will do nearly anything to achieve his goal. The promise of an opportunity to join the Camorra if he could pull his grades up was his primary motivation for improving his schoolwork. When Firo is properly motivated, he pushes himself beyond his limits and throws himself fully into the task.

Traditional ideas of good and evil don't mean much to Firo; he had to survive by himself at a young age, so he believes that stealing is acceptable when one is driven to it. After all, one is working for what they get, though not in the way their victim would like them to. Firo follows his own code and takes it upon himself to enforce it, ignoring the many instances in which his behavior crosses into hypocrisy. He sees violence as an acceptable solution to threats and as a way to teach people a lesson. Killing someone for a minor offense is where he draws the line. Firo despises people who use others for their own ends, he condemns it as selfish and disgusting. As family has always been central in his life- whether chasing it as a dream, or actually having one- he believes that one should always stand up for their family and take care of them. He's very stubborn in his beliefs and won't give them up, even if the contrary argument is logical.

Firo has a short temper and is easily provoked to violence. Someone can easily goad him into throwing a punch with physical threats and insults. Firo does not take well to having his family, friends, or himself insulted. He's frequently teased about his "girly" looks and small size, and so is overly-sensitive to remarks about his appearance. His fierce loyalty to his family means that he refuses to let anyone insult them and go unpunished. Often he overreacts to insults and threats- real or imagined.

While Firo's stubborn and even bratty with most authority figures, he is incredibly deferential to his family. He always bends to their wishes, as the last thing he wants to do is upset them. Be

COMPUTER APTITUDE: Basic. He can type and use the internet/intranet, but he has no hacking skills and would have difficulty fixing the computer if something went wrong.

AU HISTORY:
Firo's father died before he was born, leaving his mother to raise him by herself in one of New York City's rougher neighborhoods. His mother worked hard to support them both, but was stuck in a low-paying job with no upward mobility possible. The bare bones living style didn't phase him too much- Firo was never very materialistic- but he did feel cheated out of the few things he did want: family and happiness. Due to his mother's work, Firo was left in the care of an elderly neighbor until he began school. He spent the hours between the end of the school day and his mother's arrival at home roaming the streets and often getting himself into trouble. Firo frequently got into fights both in and out of school, making a huge headache for his mother. His one wish was to truly smile, but that was difficult when he had few friends and little quality time with his one remaining family member.

In his early childhood, Firo was sullen and quiet. Somehow, despite his gloomy nature, he managed to make friends with a set of four brothers. As his one real talent was fighting, Firo at first mainly saw them as sparring partners, but over time grew close to them. They gave him a bit of happiness that he clung to desperately and the opportunity to cheat off of their schoolwork.

Life was tough but bearable until Firo's mother died and he was forced to take care of himself on the streets. Throwing away conventional morality, he became a scavenger and a pickpocket. One day, his luck changed when he made the mistake of trying to rob a high-ranking member of the Martillo Camorra Family. The elderly man trounced him easily, but instead of reporting the crime, he took the confused child home to the other Camorristi. In a surprising turn of events, they adopted Firo, with the Martillo Family accountant as his primary guardian.

His childhood had made him bitter, and Firo was reluctant to trust these suspiciously generous people. Only after a few months of gentle kindness did he realize that he had found his home. The Martillos didn't hide their criminal nature from Firo, but he didn't mind. They were the people that made him happy, criminal or not. Gradually, he was coaxed out of his shell and began to be a friendlier person. Eventually the Martillos had him laughing, smiling, and chattering away.

With his newfound family, Firo's life began to return to some semblance of normal. He picked up school again, repeating fourth grade, as his attendance had been interrupted by his homelessness. His troublemaking activities picked up soon after, though he began to tone it down so as not to upset his new family too much. Most of his spare time was spent learning wrestling and knife fighting from various members of the Camorra. Once they felt he was capable enough, they allowed him to participate in some aspects of their business. His sharp eyes were helpful in catching cheaters in the casinos, but he was also sent to help in the family's one legal enterprise, the Alveare restaurant.

Firo wanted to fully throw himself into the Camorra life, but that wish was rejected by his caretakers. They wanted him to at least have the opportunity to make a name for himself in a legitimate profession. To give Firo motivation to make an effort in school, they promised that if he managed to complete high school with satisfactory grades, he could join them - legitimate business or not- as a full member. That was all he needed to start picking his grades up. However, Firo still lacked self-control and even as he attempted to curb his misbehaving, he frequently fought with other students in response to teasing. One incident led to him being suspended just two weeks before the school year ended.

At the same time, police were making a greater effort to round up members of Mafia and Camorra families. The Martillo Family accountant decided it would be best to send Firo away while this was happening so he wouldn't get too involved. Using Firo's frequent bad behavior as an excuse for switching school, he sent him to get a fresh start at Reims. Despite Firo's initial heated protesting, he yielded to his family's wishes, just like always.

So, I know this school has a ban on fun in general, what with no fightin' or drinkin' here. But I thought askin' anyway wouldn't hurt. Just so I can be sure.

[ Firo pauses, as if what he's about to say next is of great consequence. ]

Are fireworks allowed here? I haven't seen any on the mainland, but my family's got a pretty good stash back home and could send some. It'd be nice to set off a few sometime, they're really fun to watch. It's not like it'll hurt anybody.

Okay, it might, but only if you're stupid.

LOG/3RD PERSON SAMPLE:

It’s been nearly a week since Firo last spoke with his family face to face. Other teenagers might be thankful for the absence of parents looking over their shoulder and nagging, but every lonely moment has been torturous to Firo. Ever since they took him in he’s had hardly a moment alone. And that’s just the way he prefers things. Now there’s a gaping void in his life where his family should be.

At the back of his mind, he suspects that he might be blowing everything out of proportion- it’s not as if they left him forever- but that doesn’t stop him from moping. Firo’s never been a totally rational person. He’s not angry at them, instead reserving the anger for himself; the one stupid enough to provoke them into sending him away.

With all those thoughts swirling madly in his head, he walks down the hall. He clasps an envelope in both hands and tries to get up the nerve to give it a good look. What if all his hope is for nothing and the letter is not from the Martillos? Or what if he took some other kid’s mail by mistake?

Finally, he works up the nerve to lift it to his eyes. He stares at the address, reading and re-reading to make sure that it’s the right one. The handwriting is just as familiar to him as his own, and he allows himself a small smile after five minutes of gaping at it assure him that it’s a letter from home.

Completely distracted by his little gift, he walks right into the door to his room, but by this point he’s too giddy to care. Idiotic smile firmly plastered on his place, he turns the knob and nudges the door open with his foot. Firo plops himself onto his bed and tears open the letter. Moments later, he’s as content as can be, relishing in the words from home.
