Gigantic Essay... thing.

So democracy was on my side, but just barely. Because of this, and because of the many valid points and concerns which were brought forth by those folks less than convinced by my app, I feel it’s only proper that I respond with an essay to explain in greater depth my views of the game, story, and characters of ICO before I begin playing. I hope to ( Read more... )

I changed my mind. I love you. Forgive me for doubting, baby.

If you actually read all of that, I think I love you.

In addition to the pre-existing Gai-love, of course. Thanks!

I've read all of your essay and all I have to say is be zen. You've been accepted. End of story. No-one's going to dislike it because Ico got in. Once you hit that 70% mark and are accepted, that's it. Hardly anyone remembers percentages after voting rounds are closed (and if they're anything like me, only go and check them if their own app is in the batch or when people are asking for concrit), and so hey, you've been accepted. 'Tis a time for partying, not for going "but I don't think I'm all that wanted here :("

...did you end up getting Yorda as a pet journal?

Oh, sure, fine... Suck the angst right out of me. Go on, ruin my emo-tastic delusions of oppression. I don't mind.

Haven't asked yet, but it's on the list.

Ooooor, in looking at your voting tally, you got more for Ico than I did for either Kisa or Willow. I'M GOING OFF TO EMO NOW AND IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT ... or not because that is effort.

Dooooo it. Simon needs another wayward child to adopt for some unfathomable reason.

Hey, everybody needs a hobby... Persecution complexes just happen to be mine. In seriousness, though, upon rereading, I am detecting a noticeable degree of snark (apparently 'cause I was laying it on pretty thick at the time), and yeah, who needs that? Lemme edit a bit, and by that act begin not seeming like a total schmuck.

I'll get right on it, then.

I think that these are the kind of essays most of us would like to give hands, feet, and other select parts of our anatomy to write. And I feel very much secure in my choice of giving you that in-vote now.

So, wonderful, awesome essay, at least what I read of it (skipped the story section but read everything else because GODDAMMIT I WILL PLAY ICO ONE DAY I WILL FIND IT IN ONE OF SWEDEN'S GODFORSAKEN GAME STORES AND I WILL BUY IT ARGH RAGE etc) and I think you will fit right in. Apping a a solemn character is never easy, but with both you and Gaara in here you have proven that it can be done!

Ex post facto votes of confidence are just as spiffy! Thank you for the kinds words.

And hell yes, play ICO if you can! In all honesty, I'm not really all that widely-played as gamers go, but ICO was still a special experience for me. I'd heard the hype of how it was supposedly one of the most critically-acclaimed PS2 titles... And it lived up to it.

As a tremendous gaming nerd with Beyond Good and Evil, Outcast, Otogi and Fahrenheit under my belt (all artsy fartsy games that no one ever bought and the world was a sadder place for it), it is a great shame of mine that I haven't done it so far. One day it shall be done, however!

Also, would you say it's a hard game as far as combat goes?

"Hard" isn't really the word... More like frustrating. The combat centers on you protecting Yorda from the shadowy smoke guys, who try to grab her and carry her back to a glowing portal. You've gotta prevent this by beating them, and continually pulling her out of the portal when they try dragging her in. Some of the wraiths can fly, too, and they'll take off with Yorda, meaning you need to run all the goddamn way after them to wherever their portal is.

It's also frustrating because you start out with only a stick as a weapon--so you're swinging at these demons with a piece of lumber, and it generally takes quite a few hits to "kill" them. They, meanwhile, can knock you around like a red-headed stepchild--you don't die or even suffer damage or anything from it, but if the beating prevents you from rescuing the girl, it's game over. Eventually, though, you can find better weapons, and that makes combat a hell of a lot easier--by the time I got a sword, I was just waiting for them to come back and try kidnapping my princess.

Well, I'm sure once we're married I'll end up replaying the game at some point, so you could watch then...?

Thanks on all counts! I really owe you for being willing to listen to my desperate arguments and kind enough to switch your vote, so I'm glad you're not regretting those decisions. See you around!
