So!  installed Knoppix onto a flash drive... boot into Knoppix through flash drive, completely bypass the HDD this time.  Boot fine, left computer on for 2-3 hours

I had a problem like that before, first I got artifacts only while I was on Windows, then they started showing up while booting too, then it just wouldn't work anymore D: And it was the graphics card, I changed it and it worked fine again.

Have you checked the temperatures of all your devices to make sure that they actually are overheating?

or gas and matches like I said :D
