Having found out I can connect the laptop with the bittorrents on to the TV using a cable, I investigated the matter and ordered one

Normally you take the audio form the headphone socket on the computer into two phono plugs on the telly. At work I assume either you had some speakers that need plugged back in, or there was likely a 3.5mm headphone type lead which plugged into your monitor.

No, I can assure you the lead in question is somewhere in the other direction.....My office is <------ that way. And I don't have to go there for another 2 weeks anyway :)
