Iceland would certainly qualify as truly north, especially coming from Texas -- Wow, what a transition!

Yep.
The worst part was Mom trying to find winter clothes in Texas. And adjusting to the idea of Iceland instead of Hawaii, where she thought Daddy would be stationed next. Gooley was moving from NE Ohio, which would make clothes simpler. Mom ended up ordering out of the Sears catalog.

What a change! Not just a new (and cold) environment, but a new language. That's a major change for anyone, let alone a young child. I really enjoyed the way you wrote this.

We actually learned to count in Icelandic but I don't remember any of it. My brother only retained the nasty language he picked up around the docks. Everyone we encountered had a good grasp of English, though.

Wow. Iceland would be a drastic move for most people, but especially going there from Texas!

I can imagine the star viewing would be really good there, though. Was it?

I don't remember seeing the stars; turns out there was a lot of cloud cover. And it was darn cold for outside activities after dark.
