Listen sis, I spent every summer of my college life working as a waitress and saving up money for Nyc. And now that i'm here, I'm really glad I did. Summer theatre jobs are amazing, but when it gets down to crunch time, it's important to have money to live.
is it bad that instead of finding low-paying theatre internship work this summer, I just want to put in my time at a boring office job, save my money, and get the hell out of Indiana? Am I a sell out?
Actually, it's one of the most mature thoughts a theatre student can have. We often get ourselves so caught up in the motion of new plays and new roles that all other essentials - like HOW TO AFFORD LIFE - fall by the wayside.
You've had some great summer theatre jobs as preparation in that arena. You need financial preparation for the move to that big expensive city out east... and when you get there, BELIEVE ME, you're going to be so glad you didn't delay the move. This real world is exhilarating. :)
It is not bad at all, because you will end up saving money to get out of Indiana and then once you are out you will actually have money that will allow you to do more low paying theatre jobs once you get out to...wherever it is you end up going. (I hope it's NYC, because believe me, living here is like living on another planet and it's the greatest thing in the world)
