Summary:  No parent should have to bury their child.

It was something no parent should ever have to go through, the agonizing heartbreak had of losing a child. Of course, it wasn’t as if Molly and Arthur had lost the other children they had, but something in the family was just broken with Fred gone. Everyone acted different, no one seemed to smile anymore, and it seemed as if there was a heavy tension constantly hanging above the family. Molly couldn’t bring herself to look at pictures of the twins anymore, and seeing George was a constant reminder. Molly hated looking George in the eyes, because instead of seeing George, she saw Fred looking back at her with those puppy-dog eyes. She hated herself even more for not being able to look at George, but it was incredibly painful for the whole family.

As much as it hurt her, she shuddered to think of how the other children were coping, especially George. There wasn’t one single moment in all the twenty years of the twins’ life that they weren’t together. Their constant antics left Molly frantic and weary, but she loved them all the same, and even every so often found them a little humorous. Nothing could soften the ache in her heart when she’d see George fondly looking at family photos, of he and Fred holding hands, or making funny faces at the camera.

“I wish there was something I could say to make this all go away, Molly,” Arthur told her heartily one day.

She sighed and looked on at George in the living room, “I can’t even bear to look at him anymore, and it’s unhealthy. He and Fred…I can’t imagine how he must be feeling.”

“You mustn’t blame yourself,” Arthur lay a caring hand on her shoulder. “None of us asked for this.”

She reached behind and grabbed his hand, “Our little boy’s gone, Arthur.”

“We’ll see him again someday,” Arthur pressed a comforting kiss to his wife’s head.

The lives of the Weasleys had been changed forever since Fred’s death. Fred was the last person on earth that anyone would imagine dead; he was always the liveliest, living without a care in the world. He’d go out of his way to make people happy, and it seemed that the happiness had been sucked out with a vacuum in The Burrow.

No parent should have to bury their child, no parent should have to say goodbye. Molly wasn’t even allowed one last glimpse of her son, Arthur wouldn’t allow it. He insisted that they should remember the Fred that they had always known, the laughing boy with the crease around his eyes. Molly was at ease at his wake, remembering that he’d be in a higher place soon, and that he wouldn’t have to feel pain anymore. Molly would go to the end of the earth to protect her babies, and she felt that she was to blame for Fred’s death.

“Nothing you could have done would have stopped it,” Arthur assured her. “The killing curse is quick and virtually painless, and he died with a smile on his face.”

This was one of the only comforting things to the Weasley family: that Fred had passed with a smile on his face, as care-free as he had always been. Nothing could replace the emptiness the whole family felt, but nothing could also replace the lovable, laughing boy they had always known. They would never forget Fred and the profound impact he had on those around him. The strength captured in those last moments in battle made Mrs. Weasley’s chest heave with pride. A single tear slid down her cheek, and a grin spread across her face as the sun came out, and she knew Fred was looking upon her with a tender eye.
