Chapter 1 -
“Oh-chan! Come on, it’s time to eat!” mewed Nino. Ohno’s ears perked up when he heard the word ‘food’. “Really? Is it fish? Huh? Is it?” Ohno got up from his spot at the back of the cage and padded hurriedly to where Nino was, looking inside the bowl. “Hmm, I seriously don’t know. It’s all mushed up gunk. That Aiba feeds us anything he can come up with. It’s smells good though. Let’s eat up, Aiba’s gonna put us in the display cage today! I am so excited over the prospect of finally being someone’s pet, I can eat all this gunk up and not leave any for you.” “Stop it, Nino!” Ohno whined, hastily eating the soggy kitten food beside Nino. Nino giggled, his mouth full. Aiba walked pass their cage, busy in preparation. “Ne, Aibaka, do you think someone will buy us today?” Nino yelled out after swallowing. “You such a rude kitten, Nino! I’m Aiba! Where did the baka part come from?” he replied. Nino and Ohno erupted in a fit of giggles. Ohno laughed so hard, he tried to hide his face in the bowl and got pieces of food stuck to his face. Nino licked them off, earning a ‘Thanks’ from Ohno afterwards.
After cleaning up after their breakfast, Aiba gently picked up both kittens and placed them in the display cage. Ohno tested out the new blankets and soon settled in a warm spot. “Ah, this is the life. It smells so good too, Nino.” Nino pulled a disgusted face and sneezed. Ohno giggled. Nino glared at him. “Oi, Aiba! I think I’m allergic to these blankets,” Nino complained. “Hontou? Jaa, I’ll change them in a moment. Do you need more, Massu? Tegoshi?” Aiba asked the two long-haired bunnies as he filled their bowl with chopped lettuce. “That’s enough, Aiba-chan! Thanks!” said both of them in unison, munching away. Aiba went to the back of the store and grabbed some old blankets. He changed the lining with one hand while holding the kittens with the other, making a mental note not to use that particular brand of soap. Nino wriggled happily in Aiba’s hand, pleased to be in a tight space, squeezed against Ohno. “Ne, Aiba! Let us walk around the shop a bit. Ohno wants to walk off that yucky muck you served us,” Nino said. “Actually I want to sleep it off,” replied Ohno lazily. “No, you’re not going to, we’re gonna explore the shop. It’s our last day, you know. Anyway you’ve slept enough last night! Didn’t even want to snuggle up with me after dinner,” chastised Nino. Ohno just smiled languidly.
“Well, okay. Just promise me you won’t cause any trouble. Keep Ohno out of the fish tanks, Nino. And keep Nino from chewing up the hamsters, Ohno,” warned Aiba. “Hai~ We promise!” replied the two kittens. They daintily jumped out of Aiba’s outstretched hands and land on the linoleum floor. Nino climbed up the table leg and went straight for the puppy cages, Ohno following closely behind. “Hello Junno-kun!” greeted Nino to the golden retriever puppy which was playing excitedly with a small football. The puppy’s ears perked up and he padded merrily towards Nino. “Nino-san! Thanks for visiting my cage! Anything I can do?” asked Junno, who towered over the kitten even though he was younger. “Ah, you see, I’ve heard through the grapevine that you, Koki and Kame have been bought? Is that true?” Nino asked. “Yes! A teenage boy bought us yesterday! He’ll come and collect us tomorrow! I can’t wait!” exclaimed Junno, tail wagging like mad. “Congratulations! So you were quite good as yesterday’s display pet, huh? So what did you do to attract attention?” asked Nino. “Hmm, let’s see, I jumped around a lot when someone went past. Then I played with the toys. Then I slept. Then I tried to play with Koki and Yuichi but they were either too bored or too nervous to play. I barked and made happy dog noises too!” said Junno happily.
“So basically, you acted really cute and happy around potential owners? What did Koki and Kame do?” Nino prodded. “Yep! Koki just sat around all day looking bored but the boy bought Koki for his little sister ‘cos he’s a toy poodle and the little sister just wants a toy poodle for her birthday. Hmm, Kame probably acted like… a turtle. The boy probably likes turtles too. He’s a really nice looking turtle, y’know.” “Interesting…” Nino said thoughtfully. “Okay, thanks for the input, Junno! Wish me and Ohno luck! I hope we see each other again!” Nino waved. “Okay! Good luck! Bye!” said Junno, who returned to his ball game. Nino turned around while saying, “You heard that, Oh-chan? You shouldn’t complain if I nuzzle and cuddle and kiss you today, I’m doing it for both our sakes.” Nino was shocked to see that there was no kitten behind him. Instinctively, he narrowed his eyes dangerously and peered through the cages to look at the colourful multi-tiered hamster cages with winding tunnels in between. Sure enough, there Ohno was, deep in conversation with a sand-coloured dwarf hamster, excitedly doing cartwheels in front of him.
Nino gracefully hopped of the table and walked towards the hamster cage, holding his nose high in the air. “Oh-chan, what are you doing there~?” He asked in a sing-song voice, looking up at Ohno. He heard Ohno say, “Ah, yabai! I was supposed to keep him away from you. At least you’re safe behind the glass.” Nino scrunched up his kitten nose in revolt, climbed up the cage and plopped down beside Ohno, who was looking away while covering his face with his paw. “You…” Nino said treacherously to the little hamster. The hamster smiled eagerly and said, “Hello, Nino-san! Nice to meet you again! I was just showing Ohno-san my cartwheels because he said that he was gonna be today’s display pet and I thought I’d give him a bit of a show to motivate him! Yama-chan can do hand springs too, wanna see me and him togother?” The hamster stood up on his hind legs in preparation. “No! You keep away from my Oh-chan, Chinen! Or else I’m gonna eat you and Yamada and Nakajima and Inoo and Yabu and Hikaru and Nakayama and the rest of you little hamsters!” Chinen looked astonished for a moment, and then burst out in squeaky laughter. Wiping a tear away from his tiny eye, Chinen exclaimed, “Oh, you’re so funny, Nino-san! You make me laugh so much! You’re such a witty kitten!” It was Nino’s turn to look appalled and offended. He cleared his throat loudly and said, “Whatever. Let’s go, Oh-chan. We’ll look at the goldfishes.” Ohno’s face lighted up and his whiskers quivered in excitement.
They spent what seemed like an eternity to Nino, staring at the swimming fishes, slowly making him relaxed and sleepy as he lay leisurely in front of the glittering tank. Nino preferred his food to be stationary and served in front of him with a flourish, not needing any effort put in. Ohno, on the other hand, was on his hind legs, animatedly tapping the glass with his paws to attract the tiny fishes, his eyes gleaming as he wondered how he would catch them without Aiba noticing that any was missing. As Ohno thought of using a rod-like object with some food at the end to entice the fishes, he felt a warm hand encircling his body, carrying him and Nino away into the display cage. “Aww! Aiba-san, I want to look at them some more!” cried Ohno sadly. “It’s already opening time. Plus Nino is already so bored, he’s asleep.” Ohno took a look at his friend, whose head was lolling around and purring at the warmth of Aiba’s hands. Ohno giggled as he saw a trail of saliva running down Nino’s chin. Aiba carefully placed both kittens in the display cage, straightened the ribbons they wore on their collar, and asked the members of the pet shop loudly, “Jaa! Is everyone ready?” There was a chorus of barking, meowing, chirping, hissing and squeaking, yet to Aiba, it sounded a unified ‘YES!’ There was even an added squawking of ‘Yeay yeay!! Woohoo!!’ from the colourful Kanjani parrots.
Nino woke up with a start over the noise. Ohno chuckled as he watched Nino wipe away the drool and look confused. Aiba turned the sign attached to the door so that it would say ‘OPEN’ to outside. The shop waited expectantly for a minute. Even Aiba looked hopeful. After a while, everyone went back to their business and Aiba sat behind the counter, taking out his DS and playing ‘Super Mario’. “Well!” said Nino, “Wanna cuddle up, Oh-chan?” Ohno didn’t reply, so Nino took that as a ‘yes’ and settled himself inside the curve of Ohno’s furry torso, placing his head at the crook of Ohno’s neck. Ohno yawned. They stayed like that for a while, enjoying the scenery outside the window, white fluffy clouds rolling across the blue sky. “Kanjani no minna-san, what’s it like flying?” Ohno asked dreamily. “It’s great! The wind against your feathers…” reminisce Hina. “And to be able to go anywhere!” exclaimed Subaru. “And the world looks so small below your feet,” said Ohkura. “And going on dates with lady birds high up in the sky!” said Ryo. “And flying for miles with your best friends,” Maru and Yasuda smiled. “And you can just open your beak and insects go inside your mouth!” yelled out Yoko. The whole bird section thundered with laughter. Aiba laughed too. “That’s nice,” replied Ohno dreamily, Nino contented to just listen. “It’s nice that Aiba lets you guys fly sometimes too.” “Yeah, Aiba’s the best!” chorused the bird section. Aiba grinned. “Let’s just live here with Aiba!!” “Chotto matte! I’m trying to make a living too, guys!” Aiba exclaimed.
After a while of relaxing, Nino noticed a shadow over their display cage. He looked up and saw a cute little girl with pigtails looking at him with a captivated look in his face. Nino remembered what Junno said and stood up, saying, “Quick, Oh-chan! A potential customer! Look cute!” Ohno looked confused for a second and asked, “Um, how?” Nino started licking Ohno’s chubby cheeks and little nose. “Jusht loohk happfy,” said Nino, his pink tongue busy. Ohno shrugged, purred and stretched his body. Nino noticed another shadow, that of a smart-looking man straightening his glasses and wearing a tuxedo, perfectly ironed. “Okay, play with my tail!” Nino said, swishing his short white tail. Ohno said, “Yeay!” and pounced, biting Nino’s tail. “Ouch! Oh-chan!” “Sorry! Being cute is so much fun,” Ohno mewed, chewing the tip of Nino’s tail. “Oh, they’re entering the shop! Aiba, customers!” Nino yelled. “I know!” Aiba said. Nino saw the little girl run up to their cage. He placed his front paws on the edge of the cage and stood up, looking ecstatic. The little girl picked up both Nino and Ohno in each hand and started to nuzzle them. Ohno giggled, “It’s so ticklish! She’s so cute!” Whilst Aiba was busy talking to the man with the glasses, Nino and Ohno received the most cuddles and kisses they’ve received from a human. Slowly they were starting to fall in love with the girl and soon it wasn’t hard to look happy in front of her too.
As if remembering something, the little girl held both kittens at arm’s length, a very puzzled and distressed look clouding over her face as she stared at Nino for a minute, then at Ohno for another. Nino realized and said loudly, “Aiba~! I think she’s starting to wonder between the two of us! Quick, tell her to buy both of us, I can’t live without Oh-chan!” Ohno said, “Aww, really, Nino? Me too!” Aiba kneeled down beside the girl and started to talk to the girl. In the midst of explaining, Aiba touched Nino’s nose and Nino instinctively tried to bite his finger. “Ops, sorry, Aiba,” Nino said. Ohno received the pat on his head like a good little kitten. Nino saw the happiness on the girl’s face after Aiba finished talking. He gleefully said, “Yeay, thanks, Aiba! We owe you one!” Aiba smiled discreetly at them. After some chaos and disarray over the little girl’s father not wanting the kittens, which involved Nino and Ohno desperately trying to comfort the little girl and praying hard that her father is easily moved by his daughter’s tantrums, they started to pick out the items needed for Nino and Ohno’s comfort in their new home, most of them pointed out by Nino and Aiba dutifully recommending them to the little girl. Nino purred as the girl put a brand new collar around his neck, “I love yellow! She has such good fashion sense. We look good, Oh-chan.” Ohno nodded eagerly.
Learning that they would head for a picnic first from Aiba’s conversation with the girl and the smooth man with the tux, Nino and Ohno happily jumped around on their leashes as the girl guided them out of the shop. Before heading out, Nino yelled out to the shop, “Bye-bye, everyone! Wish us luck in our new life! See you again!” Ohno said, “Goodbye! Wish all of you luck!” The shop filled with happy animal noises, all wishing them well. They waited outside the shop for Aiba and the other customer. The little girl said, “Ah! That’s right! I haven’t properly introduced myself to you. I’m Matsumoto Reiko, but you guys can call me Ojou-chan. My butler’s name is Kageyama. I’ll let you sleep in my princess bedroom, okay!” Nino and Ohno mewed in response. Ohno looked at Nino and asked, “Did you understand what she said, Nino?” “A bit. I think she asked if we like butter and if we sleep like princesses.” “Wow! Sugoi na. I think I’m gonna need to spend more time with her to understand what she’s saying,” said Ohno wistfully. “Aiba taught me a bit of human language before you came in,” Nino said smugly.
The girl wondered aloud above them, “Why are they taking so long? You guys wanna play in the park with me soon, right?” Both kittens mewed dutifully. She poked her head around the shop door and yelled to Aiba and the man. Nino looked too, and noticed Aiba blushing and looking flustered. He smirked and wondered if the man had made his move on Aiba. “Let’s go, Aiba! Stop being all shy, we wanna play!” hollered Nino. “Hai,” whispered Aiba tactfully. The man seemed to ask Aiba something and Aiba answered, “Nothing!” shaking his head. “Jaa, ikou~!” yelled Nino happily as the started to skip with their new owner, who was humming a nursery rhyme involving little kittens. “We are really going to enjoy our new life, Oh-chan!” “Yeay!” Ohno answered joyfully.
