Living Cavern
The smooth, rounded walls cavern sweep upward from an oval base, two dragonlengths long and one wide, large enough to seat every member of the Weyr at mealtimes. The soft blackness of the lava which forms these caverns swallows glowlight, so shelves for glowbaskets abound, dotting the walls every three or four paces and casting gentle greenish light toward the sparkles of gold volcanic glass embedded in the ceiling. Ancient, lustrous tables run along the axis of the cavern, and at the far end rests the raised dais and high table, where Weyrleaders and honored guests eat during formal occasions. Behind the high table, the Weyr's symbol is embedded into stone: a smoking mountain in black on... [look closer]
Perched near the food are twenty-eight firelizards.

Sorcha walks in from the South Caverns.
Atticus sails waveringly in from the Southeastern Bowl.
"Oh, well I'm sure things will pick up soon! Dry spells happen every once and again, but one must be the best of things." And with this she displayed her trademark 'it'll work out' smile. "And yes, cookies are good, but perhaps I've had too many." She had taken to stealing a few every time she passed by.
"Ah, I see.." She said. Noticing a few other candidates walking by, she gave a little wave, and called out, "Hi!" Finishing her cookies, she walked back to the table and sat down, beside Anala. "So, what do you do as a candidate?"
Minka is walking with Sorcha, egg tucked safely beneath one arm, whilst her other carries a box of various odds and ends, fabric and glue visible amongst the mess collection, "We should get that hide of Rylen, later - it'll work better than these flimsy bits of fabric we've got." The box is sat upon the nearest table, Minka carefully then settling her rolly polly ovoid next to it, "Stay." Podgy fingers pause in a net-like enclosure about the egg, moments passing as Min assures that it won't roll from the table. Those with familiar faces are briefly acknowledged, Min sparing a grin over in their direction, followed by a wave. Sorcha is given a look, Min now diverting her attention to the box as she picks up a piece of thin white material, "It's not strong enough to hold it's shape. So.. Maybe some of this?" Another, thicker strip, is selected from the basket, Min holding it up for inspection, "This will do."
Sorcha shuffles in alongside Minka, of course - the two are rarely apart. She, too, carries a box of various arts-and-crafts things. A sling wrapped around her upper body holds her precious Idioth just above her hip, much like a mother would tote around a new baby. "Mrmm," she replies glumly to Minka, raising her free hand to rub irritably at her eyes. "'M too tired to think much about it. I'll trace the pattern onto the fabric and you can cut. I don't think I can be trusted with anything sharp today."
"Drills and chores." The immediate response left without her thinking of anything. "Well there are also some interesting things that happen, like dragon's dive bombing pools and people getting soaked." She gave a giggle, the memory still fresh in her mind. But then the greeting that Balezhia gave off brought her attention to the others. She watched and listened as the girls started up something, curiosity perking up. "Need some help?" Was all she managed, hoping to get some details as to what they were up to.
Balezhia goes home.
The glumness of Sorcha is duly noted, Minka querying, "Are you alright?" The piece of fabric is let alone for the moment, dropped back carelessly into the basket. In an attempt to raise spirits, Min offers jokingly, "I'm getting a little worried, you haven't insisted I do twenty pushups yet." She slinks down into a seat, waiting for Sorcha to do the same, "Ah, leave it. We can do it another time, after all - we'll be carting about Spaztith and Idioth for time yet." The basket is then pushed aside, Min gently sliding her egg across the table with it, "Especially since you don't feel trustworthy with anything sharp, and I'm quite fond of my limbs just where they are." Pause, "So, just who are you losing sleep over?"
Sorcha wiggles out of the cumbersome sling and spends some time arranging the cloth into a little nest, into which she places her egg. That done, she flops gracelessly into a chair. "What do you mean, who?" she says with a scowl, putting the box of supplies on the table and pushing it to one side. "I don't want to talk about it. Besides, it's whom, not who. I would be losing sleep over him. But I'm not. So it's not. Because I'm not." Sigh. "Let's change the subject."
Minka frowns, fingertips tapping atop the table, "I've known you long enough to know this is more than a silly mood. So, if it's not whom then /what/? I'd rather talk about it now, that way we can get to the bottom of it and I won't have to put up with your gloomy face all this evening when we have laundry duty together." She grins a little, "And we both know, that laundry duty needs no help in already being a tedious chore." Though, withdrawing a little from the questioning, she relents to ask, "Fancy a bubbly? We never did end up getting them after 'drills'." Deaglan is noted from aside, Min waving her hand in a greeting, lest it be seen or not.
"Hello!" Lan says flashing both Sorcha and Minka a cheerful smile as he begins loading more food than one might think a boy his size could possibly eat on to a plate before settling down at a table to begin eating."How are you Minka?" He asks after swallowing a bite.
Talara walks in from the South Caverns.
Minka looks from Sorcha back over to Deaglan, "Oh.. I'm alright. Just passing time really. What about yourself?" The food piled up upon his plate earns a bit of a frown, Min absently rubbing beneath her chin, "What's on today's menu?" She nods towards Sorcha, "I'm just trying to convince her to come sample the dessert selections, most preferably the bubbly pies." Shifting back in the seat a little, Minka asks after a brief glance towards Spaztith, "So, how are things with... Dumbath? Was it?" An abandoned fork on her table is eyed, Min picking it up and examining it with a bored face - "Fancy a swim as well, later?" The query is directed to either of her candidate counterparts, Min continuing, "Before we start at the laundry, that is."
Anala picked up on the conversation, but decided to stay out of personal affairs. She turned back to Balezhia, ready to continue their own. "So, have you always lived her?" She knew very little about her and well, she had time at the moment, might as well get to know her better.
"Dumbath, the green." Lan says nodding his head a bit and smiling a bit,"It's going quite well. I'm getting the hang of balancing her quite easily with everything else I do." He pauses for a moment,"Only after I've been done eating for a bit, wouldn't want a cramp. Got one, one time. Horrible /horrible/ thing." He does give a small laugh though.
Anala walks to the Bowl.
Minka seems rather disappointed at the notion they are all going to have to wait, "Ah well then, we'll let the contents of your tummy settle before we go down for a dip, alright? I haven't been yet, only really just went down to have a quick look - Have you?" The sudden movement of a kitchenhand passing the table causes it to shake a little, Spaztith rolling steadily, instigating a sharp gasp from Minka as she reaches out. Stalling the movement, she breathes a sigh of relief, "This thing will be the death of me." Since of course, she's still under the impression the slightest drop could shatter it into thousands of pieces.
Talara walks in from the Southeastern Bowl.
"I go swimming regularly. It helps keep my body in shape." Lan says before taking several more bites. It also makes him really quite hungry because he has an incredibly high metabolic rate, both naturally and hyped from constant exercise.
Talara walked into the living caverns and noticed the crowd there. She gave them all a wave and a smile and went over to grab some food. She started to pile some on a plate and then turned around to the others, "Care if I join you?" Her brown firelizard had his tail wraped around her neck, and he gave an inquiring chirp in their direction.
Minka doesn't. Well, unless it's recreational. Hence the chubbiness. She nods, listening to Lan's informative response with a rather bored look, "Ah, I see. I've never really been one for exercise myself." She wiggles a little, arms crossed and folded over her stomach. As Talara speaks, she raises her head, looking a little thankful for the intervention, "Not at all, take a seat." She shuffles to the side a bit, moving to allow space for another person.
Sorcha drums her fingers on the tabletop, her eyes following the wobbling Spaztith. "You should make a sling, like mine," she offers helpfully, motioning to the nest of fabric that holds Idioth in place. "Makes it easier to carry them around, and it leaves your hands free. I managed to keep Idioth on me all day yesterday, even through chores. He behaved very well. Not a peep from him the whole time!" Sparkle. Lan is listened to thoughtfully, and Sorcha tips her head to the side before commenting: "Swimming is very good for you. The water offers more resistance than air, so each movement works your muscles better than if you were excercising on land. And the water also cushions your joints, so you don't end up hobbled over like the older Riders." She can't help it. She's a know-it-all.
"Thanks." Talara said cheerfully. She made a fluid movement to the table and sat down next to Minka. Setting her plate down and letting Tezzer crawl down onto the table, she turned her fair green eyes to everyone and introduced herself. "I'm Talara."
"It's how I was raised, but then again my mother is a Healer." Lan says laughing a little bit,"Plus, it helps when I would have to run after Naela." "Hello!" He says smiling a bit at Talara,"When unused to swimming the ocean is dangerous, so the Waterfall is best when that is the case."
Talara looked over at Deaglan curiously. "So what about swimming?" she asked hoping to join in on the conversation without being disruptive. Tezzer prodded her elbow, wanting a piece of meat roll for himself. He gave a little chirp and attempted to seem as innocent as possible. She grabbed a meatroll, and offered it to him, glancing behind her slightly to where he was perched.
Minka grins, "Well then you can make one for me, I already tried, and it just looked dangerous - so I decided it was better carrying Spaz then have him go splat while I'm walking if he slips from it." Talara is given a smile, Min returning, "Well met, I'm Minka." Sorcha is eyed. Nerd. Smile, but it's ok, because Minka is one too, "Do you have a section about it in your notebook, Sorcha?" Minka teases her fellow candidate rather playfully, "Well, then you can observe it today when I go for my first swim in the pool, rather than the baths today." She leans back; Spaztith cradled in her lap. Deaglan is given a brief nod, "Well, I have been swimming before, Deaglan, but I'll take that into account." She can swim, honest! Just slowly, and it's more of a paddle.
Sorcha sticks her tongue out at Minka and rises, quickly wrapping the sling around her body again and tucking Idioth safely inside. "Sorry to chat and run, but I think I'll try to sneak in a nap while the Barracks are empty," she says, looking a little guilty. "It's the only time I can sleep, considering the horrible snoring at night. Honestly, who would EVER want to share a room with a bunch of boys? I mean, apart from the practical reasons. Reproduction of the species and all that stuff. Apart from that, they're noisy and they smell." She sighs heavily, standing aside and pushing in her chair. "Enjoy your
Talara continued to eat as she listened to the others. She waved good bye to Sorcha, and stiffled a laugh at her comment, understanding the horrible snoring that could come up during the night.
If this were an anime, Lan would be sweatdropping, or perhaps getting a pom-pom right about now, as it is the boy just lets out a little sigh and glancing towards the girls,"I don't smell." He mutters a little bit under his breath,"And some of the girls snore just as loud."
Sorcha goes home.
Talara smiled at Deaglan's comment and looked at him out of the corner of her eyes; she was amused. "Oh don't worry." her voice held a hint of laughter. "I'm sure she was just meaning in general, not you in paticular." she puts her hand over her mouth slightly to cover a laugh.
Minka watches Sorcha move off, looking thoroughly concerned. Her gaze drifts back to the company she keeps, the chubby candidate murmuring, "I think I might go check and see how she is, if you'll excuse me." As she stands and carefully makes her way past Talara, she adds, "I'll be down at the waterfall pool a little later, maybe I'll see you after the food had settled?" Hurriedly putting Spaz in along with the basket of fabric, she lugs it off back towards the barracks, trailing lazily behind Sorcha, "See you all later."
Talara waved goodbye to Minka, unable to speak at the moment with a mouth full of food. Tezzer, still busy with his own treat held in his talons, looked back at Minka and gave a good bye warble then diverted his attention back to his meal.
