Well, it's hard to avoid sadness when you tell stories about life in the time of the war. ;) And you managed to give me the impression I was walking with them among devastation and destruction.

You know, this is so AU I think you could very well change the names and label it as original. :)

You know, I'd never have thought of a WWII setting as the ideal R/S AU fic, but this just works perfectly. It felt very real; all achy and lovely. ♥

Thank you very much! :)

I'm sure it's been done... :D I think a lot of people take WWI as their R/S war metaphor, because they were in the first war, but the second just seemed to fit them so well: and I'm really happy you think it works.

Very nice. I know I always want to shake your Remus a little and tell him "You know, you can tell other people important things!" but perhaps I'm one to talk, and anyway that's all just to say that you write Remus (and Sirius) very vividly and that's true in this AU, too.

Thank you very much! :)

Yes, my Remus can be annoyingly secretive. :D In WWI, he'd probably have been taken out and shot before admitting anything... It always seems to me to be part of his character, though.

This is wonderful! I always love your AUs, and I just adore the period, and the little asides about the Potters and Peter and Regulus, Sirius' comment about his mother and the Ritz, and the young Remus and Sirius jumping on buses to explore London. So much wonderful. It's all so atmospheric - the ending is lovely and poignant, and I absolutely love this image:

he had grown to love London in the moonlight: the mysterious silver buildings, the cars with their sliver of dipped headlight, the huge, fantastical outlines of buses looming in the distance

Oh, thank you very much! :) That's such a lovely comment. *hugs* And I'm so glad you found it atmospheric, because I really worked to get the feeling right.

I always love your AUs, Minnow. There's something so telling about watching characters you think you know in new situations and contexts; some characteristics some to the fore, others recede. Remus' emotional distance--the reserve and the longing for closeness--really come through well here.

I have such issues with the whole notion of wartime heroism, but you've walked lightly here.

Brava! Maggie

Thank you very much! :)

It's always fascinating to write an AU, though this one was a bit of a challenge because I found out that I actually knew nothing about WWII. Though I certainly do now! :D I'm so glad Remus came across as he was meant to: I wanted to be subtle, but not too subtle!
