I love this. Simply love it. It's a perfect picture of the dissolution of a seemingly happy marriage, all for something that Harry can't control. It's sad that she drowns all her frustrations in liquor, but that, too, is very realistic.

I feel very sorry for Ginny. It hurt me that she was preparing dinner for him, even if it was store bought. She cared enough to fake it. And that she waited for him at night. It's very hard for me to feel sorry for Ginny in general, but you, with your lovely and sad fic, managed to do just that.

I wonder how she will handle the truth.

Thank you very much! :) I'm absolutely delighted that you liked it.

That's pretty much how I felt before I started this. The original inspiration for the prompt was about Remus living with Sirius and falling for Tonks: in fact, I wrote quite a lot of it before this came along and elbowed it out. But it was hard to get into Ginny's head at first. I wrote about twenty different beginnings before coming back to the original one.

I wonder how she will handle the truth.

I don't think she'll ever be able to compute it. Most women outside LJ would assume their husbands were having affairs with other women, and Ginny is going to do anything she can not to face what's really going on. In this universe, anyway!

You are right - most LJ women who are not into the kind of fanfic we are would probably not have a clue anyway. The condoms were particularly telling - and hurtful. Oh, Ginny, I really wanted to hug you then...and then shake you and tell you to open your eyes. *wipes a tear*

The only way she'll know is if Harry comes out.

My entry to the TDM challenge for this week - which is written in my head, but not on paper or screen yet - is exactly that...

What I loved most about this is the fact that neither Harry nor Ginny are blameless here. You've managed to give us a Ginny that, while we can sympathise with her wanting to numb herself, isn't a martyr, and a Harry who isn't a complete and utter bastard. This is a very realistic portrayal of the slow, and silent, disintegration of a marriage.

Thank you very much for a lovely comment! :) I'm so glad you found it realistic: I wanted to try and keep it as down-to-earth as possible, and I'm very happy that came across.

Loved this sad story - I was angry at Harry for treating Ginny so badly and angry at Ginny for not working out what was really going on. Very well written, it was almost painful (but in the best way!).

Fave line - "That’s defiantly better. Or does she mean definitely?"
(hee hee, that recurrent mistake annoys me too!)

Thank you very much! :) I'm so glad you liked the 'defiantly'. It had to be done... :D

I was thinking about your story on my walk to the railway station en route to work this morning - so you can see it really gelled! I think now that Ginny subconsciously may realise the truth about Harry - she cut her hair short to look like one of her brothers - maybe she really does have an inkling of Harry's wants.

It's really great to know the story's stuck with you beyond LJ. :)

That's a very interesting insight. I think she's probably getting quite far into denial as well.
