I have heard it said many times that the reason America is so obsessed with celebrities is that we don't have any official royalty. So celebrities take that place in our culture. As such, we heft them onto pedastals and then wait when they fall so we can feel good that we don't have real royalty.

Personally, I think parents, family members and honest to goodness community leaders should be heroes. People got mad at Charles Barkley when he said he wasn't and shouldn't be a role model. And while the former is sadly untrue, the latter was one of the most accurate statements ever.

I can't believe it's been 10 years, but it has. I remember watching the TV and seeing news flash to the 45-mph chase down LA's freeways. And a newscaster pleading with OJ on the air in this broken-hearted voice usually reserved for parents issuing pleas for the return of a missing child ( ... )
