I'm putting this up here for the Final Girl Film Club. I can't remember if I ever posted it back in November, but here's a short write up on The Exorcist.

Film Report:

William Friedkin’s The Exorcist

After reading your review, I find I've obviously forgotten much of this movie (blocked it out?). Perhaps it is my Catholic upbringing or just the fact that it scared the crap out of me when I first saw it. I remember when I first read the book, I was sure that either I would go straight to Hell or become posessed myself. Somehow the book always frightened me more than the movie.

The Iraq reference is particularly ironic now, especially considering the book was originally written in 1971 (years before Saddam Hussein even came into power).

I liked your summation: Only by facing evil can we hope to understand or even defeat it..

P.S. Speaking of evil people, what did you think of The Departed?

It sounds like I liked The Departed a lot more than you did, and I don't consider it to be one of his lesser films in the least (of course, I really consider things like Boxcar Bertha, New York New York, and Cape Fear to be lesser Scorsese films) and while I haven't seen Infernal Affairs, I thought he adapted the story in such a way that if I hadn't known it was a remake, I never would've guessed. End paragraph sentence.

It wasn't actually designed as a critique of your critique, but I guess I latched onto the "lesser" moniker. I'm not as fond of Gangs of New York, and I guess I would've been happier if he won it for The Aviator, but The Departed manages to be funny, which is a little rarer for Scorsese in the last ten to fifteen years ( ... )
