I guess it depends on how much space you want. You can probably get away with a Zen Stone or a Zen V. If you want to bark up the iPod tree, a Nano would be more than adequate.
If you want to shove every track you have onto the thing, that's a seperate discussion, but I somehow doubt you're aiming that high for "something to listen to on the bus."

It's got quality guts, though. It's basically a Creative Zen in a Dell-branded skin.
If he only needs a few gigs, I'm going to agree with your recommendation of a Zen Stone. Those things are tiny, capacitous, and quite inexpensive.
