Summary: The classroom is missing a student.
“Here, replacing ‘x’ with pi, looking at the conjectures, ‘n’ would equal…”
The teacher looked down at her notebook, and then called out a name.
“Hwang Minhyun, to what would ‘n’ equal?”
She was still facing the board after thirty seconds. “Hwang Minhyun?” The rest of the students started to sit up and look around, sensing a disturbance in the usual lull and drone of the classroom.
Their teacher turned to face her class, scanning the room with sharp eyes.
“Hwang Minhyun? Where’s Minhyun?”
The students began to murmur, glancing at the empty desk in the back of the room, where Hwang Minhyun usually sat, keeping his head down or staring out the window into the parking lot.
Jonghyun stretched to get a look at that desk from his own spot at the front of the classroom after finishing up his last note with a well sharpened pencil.
“Hey, he’s there! Look, look…”
Half of the classroom rose quickly to their seats to the window. The window would only open a few inches, but some of the girls bent low to cry out to their classmate, cupping their hounds around their mouths.
“Minhyunnie! Oppa!”
“Yah, Minhyun oppa! Look this way!”
He had been lying on his stomach on the bench, playing with a leaf a few inches from his nose. When he heard them yelling, he raised himself up on his arms like a cat and looked over at the window. The girls giggled when he waved at them.
“Wow, aren’t his legs really long?”
“He’s so cool…”
“But won’t he get in trouble for being out of class?”
“No, his face is too pretty, so Sunsaengnim will go easy on him…”
Jonghyun hadn’t gotten up, but was craning his neck and tilting back his chair. He rolled his eyes at the girls’ comments, and spoke up, smiling, when their giggling started up again.
“Honestly, I don’t see what you think is so good about that punk kid…”
A couple of the girls looked down at their shoes, but a bolder one scoffed and said with a smirk, “Really, Jonghyun-ah, wouldn’t you be able to tell us that the best?”
That wiped the grin off of his face. Her eyes glinted knowingly, and one of her friends laughed with the same look when he blushed.
“What is that supposed to-”
“Quiet down, now!”
During this time, the teachers instructions for them to calm had been drowned out by the wave of excited voices, but she had picked up her podium by its sides and slammed it to the ground. The crowd around the window scattered, scurrying back to their seats while she glared at them all.
Sighing loudly, she looked out the window herself at Minhyun, who had by now collected a small pile of leaves to play with.
“I suppose I’ll have to go get him… Can’t allow this kind of behavior…”
From his seat Jonghyun could hear his teacher’s annoyed muttering, and raised his hand quickly. “Uh, Sunsaengnim… I don’t think you should leave the classroom unattended just because of him…”
She turned to him and smiled, her bias showing. “What do you suggest I should do then, Kim Jonghyun?” She spoke sweetly, and Jonghyun already knew he would get his way.
He spoke quickly anyway, but tried to keep the urgency-or rather, excitement-out of his voice. “I could go get him, miss.”
Jonghyun heard the bold girl from earlier scoff, and his face reddened again while their teacher contemplated for a few more seconds before sending him out the door.
Hands in his pockets, he clattered down the stairs, bumping into the walls at the end of flights because he was moving too fast. If his cheeks were still pink by the time he got down, he could just use the run as an excuse.
The cold air hit him as soon as he opened the door, but he approached coolly to the boy now lying on his back with one leg up on his knee, twisting a leaf between his fingers.
“Hey, JR.”
“Why are you such a cliché?”
The boy laughed and sat up, folding his hands together and speaking with his eyebrows raised. “Isn’t that what I say to you every day? Teachers favorite? ‘Mom’s friend’s diligent son?’ Class President-sshi?”
Jonghyun rolled his eyes. “Give me a break,” he murmured, and looked back at their school building, where he was surprised to find crowds surrounding more than just the window of their classroom; eyes on the upper floors were watching them, too, their owners’ hands pressed up against the glass.
“Look, you’ve started something now. You’ve disrupted more than one classroom, y’know?”
Minhyun chuckled again, crinkling the dead leaf in his hand into pieces. “No, a lot of them weren’t there before. They started showing up as soon as you came out. They all want to catch a glimpse of their handsome and respectable Kim Jonghyun.”
JR was making a shooing motion towards the students at the window. “Well, honestly your fanbase has a few more members than than mine, so… I suppose it’s both of our faults that they’re watching?”
Minhyun snorted and lied back down. Jonghyun wrapped his arms around himself and spoke gentler. “Come on, Minhyun-ah. Let’s go back inside, it’s cold and-”
“-And people are looking at us, right? It’s embarrassing for you to come out and get me, right?”
“It’s not embarrassing… Well, not very, and I just don’t want you to get in trouble.”
The boy on the bench sighed. “Thanks, JR. You’re a great friend.”
“You can be sarcastic inside, you know.”
Minhyun shook his head, and began to speak quietly. “Don’t you think… that if there were no one else in the world, it’d be easier?”
JR came closer to the bench, putting his ear towards Minhyun. “Huh?”
“We would never have to go inside, and we would never even have to come to school in the first place. That would be better, right?”
“I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about right now, Minhyun. I think the cold is getting to your head.” JR laughed.
“Besides, if there was no one else in the world, your fanclub would be empty.”
“Well, I guess you could be there, too. Then you could be a part of mine, and I could be a part of yours.”
…If I were there?
“W-well, yeah, but…” Jonghyun pushed the thought out of his mind for the time being. “Anyway, why are you thinking like that right now, anyway? Why are you suddenly having deep thoughts, you hardly ever put that kind of brainpower into your schoolwork…” He laughed, but Minhyun didn’t smile.
“Hey, Minhyun…”
“I’m moving, JR.”
He had suddenly sat up and crushed several leaves underneath his feet with a loud crunch, but Jonghyun was too busy registering that last piece of information to hear.
“…Come again?”
“I’m moving out of Seoul… Out of Korea, actually. My dad got a job in Hong Kong, and we’re leaving in a week or so…”
He rolled again onto his back and stared up at the sky. “I haven’t told Sunsaengnim, or anyone, actually… I was going to tell her if she was going to scold me, maybe it would’ve softened the blow, huh?”
“You’re moving to China? In a week?”
Hwang Minhyun was silent again.
“Yah, listen to me! Why didn’t you tell me? What the hell, I… I’m your best friend, how could you honestly-”
“My only friend, to be honest. I thought that was going to make it easier for me to leave, but… I guess not.”
JR was going to yell some more, but then took a look at Minhyun’s face. He had seen a lot of Minhyun’s expressions; angry, elated, surprised, disappointed… But now his expression was blank, his eyes empty.
Jonghyun opened his mouth, about to say something, then closed it.
He took a seat on the bench less than a foot away from Minhyun’s head.
“Minhyun, it’s not like I won’t be your friend anymore. It’s not very hard to visit, and there’s always the internet…”
“See, if my dad wasn’t part of this world, or his boss or whatever, then I wouldn’t have to go… But then again, if you didn’t exist, I guess I wouldn’t mind leaving so much? Hah, a bit of a puzzle, isn’t it, but either way, it’d be easier if there were no one else in the universe…”
“I thought you said we could join each other’s fan cafés?”
“Of course, there are some sacrifices that a person has to make as the last man on Earth…”
“Hey, you!” JR shook Minhyun’s shoulder and they both laughed.
“I’m not joking around, though, Minhyun. There are lots of ways that we can still talk, and… and hey! We’re seniors now, right? We’re graduating really soon, and you can come back to attend university, and if you do that you’ll only be gone for less than a year. You won’t be away from Korea for long…”
Or away from me.
Minhyun gave a half-smile. “Yeah, but… I doubt my parents would want me to go so far away… They wouldn’t allow it…”
“Maybe if you got into a really good school… Like Seoul-dae!”
The taller boy almost choked on his laughter. “Do you honestly think I could get into SNU? Think about it, just for a minute.”
“Sure, sure! I could help you study over video chat, and…”
They looked at each other.
“…and if you maybe set your sights a little bit lower, you could be back here in no time!”
Minhyun laughed, shoving his friend lightly. “You’ll help me, huh?”
He was looking straight at JR, who was glad that his friend’s eyes had some warmth back in them. He let out a little sigh of relief as he said, “Yeah, of course. Of course I will.”
“But only if you come inside!”
JR had risen from his seat and began running towards the building. He grinned when he heard another’s footsteps pattering on the concrete close behind him.
“Ack! What are you doing, let go of me!”
Minhyun, with his longer legs, had caught up quickly and wrapped his arms around Jonghyun’s neck.
“It’s fanservice, fanservice! People are still watching, see? Up there…”
“Are you kidding me? Let go!”
“Aw, Jonghyun-ah!”
Their loud voices still echoed across the pavement even after the door had closed behind them.
--
“They’re so cute, look…”
“Ah, they’re handsome…”
The girls in the classroom were again up at the window to watch and listen, ignoring their teacher’s protests.
“Hey, do you think if I asked out Jonghyun, he would say yes? He wouldn’t reject me, right? He’s too nice for that.”
One of the bold girl’s friends had looked up at her, expecting a wink and a positive answer.
But she had only sighed, hand up on the window as she looked at the duo with the rest of them.
“Don’t get your hopes up… I don’t think that any girl will ever have Kim Jonghyun… In fact, a lot of the guys don’t have much of a chance, either.”
Her friend raised her eyebrows.
“Huh?”
But her classmate only smiled, and went back to her desk as the door slammed behind the two boys.
