It was difficult, liking Yuri.
Not because she was never around, but because she rarely wasn’t.
She would always be there, speaking into his ear or laughing at his jokes or tapping him on the shoulder when he was too busy looking at her to realize that he had been left behind.
When she was gone, he would miss her so much it was shameful. He would think about what he would say to her the next time they crossed paths, and then would grin when he thought about how she would respond.
It was the best feeling in the world.
It was the worst feeling in the world.
He wondered if she could see it in his eyes, could guess what he was feeling when he looked down at his hands after she flashed him that smile and fumbled with his words as he asked how she was.
Minho almost laughs out loud when he finds the answer to that question the day he sees himself somewhere other than the mirror.
Amber’s voice was calm when she greeted him, but it was when he smiled and said,
“It’s good to see you,”
did he realize that someone understood. From the way she bowed, deep and slightly shaky, and how her teeth folded over her lip to suppress an excited grin. Minho is sorry, almost ashamed, for pushing someone else into having those feelings, into riding that soul splitting roller coaster.
So before they part ways, he speaks low.
“It’s difficult, isn’t it?”
She looks up to him, and her puzzled face disappears the second she looks into his eyes.
And he just wishes they had glasses in their hands. He wishes they could hold them up and clink them together, so just for a moment they could stop thinking and drink to the pleasure and pain of unrequited love.
