Minho has a spot.
He found it years ago when he ran away from home. Not crying, not angry. Simply curious.
In the spring the grass is warm and dry enough to sleep on for hours. In the summer the spot is shaded perfectly. The trees shield him from the wind in the fall and then in the winter their high branches catch the snow.
When he sits in his spot he can hear rustling and squawking and the soft breeze making the leaves whisper. He can hear himself think.
So the spot is never too cold or too hot or too loud or too quiet.
And the best part was that it was no one else’s but his.
Minho has a friend.
He found him years ago when Kibum’s cat wandered into the Choi’s hydrangeas. Not hurt, not lost. Simply curious.
Kibum is the opposite of Minho’s spot. Extreme, in every meaning of the word. Intense and fast-paced. He’s relentless and dramatic with every game they play or bet they make, though Minho wins every time. He laughs with his head thrown back. He knows everything about everything.
It makes Minho feel nervous, the way even his heart seems to beat heavier, quicker whenever it’s the two of them. As if Kibum, simply by being there, sped up the world.
So Kibum is always too fierce, always too brazen, always too… alive.
But Minho likes him anyway.
Minho misses it.
The feeling of contentment he used to get from sitting in his spot. Because, after a while, he begins to feel that something is incomplete about the situation.
He tries staying even longer to contemplate, but he can’t concentrate, can’t relax, as well as he used to. The sounds of outside interrupt his thoughts and listening to just his own breathing doesn’t seem like enough anymore.
He wonders what the problem is.
Perhaps he’ll ask Kibum.
