Hi everyone, this is Kelly's friend Scott. A long time internet friend from Ohio. Her and i started talking online way back in 1994. We quickly became net friends and often times talked everyday

Tobi and vestibular problems/hearing loss

This is going to seem like the most random thing in the world, but it was important to me that I get it out there, even if Kelly herself cannot see it. This is something that her family would benefit from knowing as well.

All her friends know of the horrible vestibular issues she suffered from being on Tobramycin. I work for a geneticist, and it turns out that researchers have discovered that in some people, there is a genetic predisposition to hearing loss when they are exposed to aminoglycoside antibiotics, even just once. Kelly must have been one of these people. Her doctors should NEVER have given her Tobi; they should have tested for this gene first.

I am posting this in hopes that Kelly's father will see this, because since this sensitivity to aminoglycoside antibiotics is genetic, others in her family could have it too, and they should never be given Tobi or any other antibiotics in the aminoglycoside class unless they are tested for the mutation first. Athena Diagnostics is one lab that offers testing for this mutation. I
