I really, really, really don't get this Avatar the Last Airbender movie casting wankathon lately.

Hollywood whitewashed a movie. Who'd have thought? Big fucking news. Why was even anyone hoping for anything less?

The part I don't get the most is where people are boycotting the movie and calling for people to not go see it, and if they do, they ( Read more... )

random, wank, rage

Ha! I totally agree, and I've been scared to say anything for fear of getting smacked down. Primarily by a group I like to call "Self-Righteous White Females With Way Too Much Time On Their Hands." Yeah, Hollywood cast a bunch of white people. Why is everyone surprised? This shit happens all the time. In the big scheme of things, how big an effect do they really think the casting of one movie is going to have on civil rights of any racial group? Not giving a shit who was cast in the movie doesn't make you racist. Honestly, I think initially they probably cast white actors in ignorance because the characters look relatively white, not out of some evil agenda.

...But I'm not gonna see it. I heard it sucked. XD

It's the smackdown that's pissing me off. It seems everyone who doesn't agree with them is instantly stupid, racist, redneck, white trash... blah blah. And I don't get why this is.

And then I find the answer: I've started to think a good majority of them are reflecting. Projecting. They simply think everyone is as fucked up as they are! Are they so insecure about their political-correctness that the alarms inside their heads start going WEE-OO if someone dares to say that this sort of shit happens all the time in Hollywood?

While I agree that Katara and Sokka could be a tad darker (well, they are depicted dark), I don't get why everyone's blowing up so madly over Aang? The kid actually looks like Aang! And I'm mad they didn't cast a drop-dead gorgeous hunk as Zuko, and that's all.

I'm not gonna see it either. Maybe for special effects. If I'm bored and have nothing to watch I'll download it off the darn internet, trying to ignore the prudish behavior of its oh-so-sensitive fanbase.

Yes. I mean, I was afraid to even say my opinion. That says to me that people are being unfair. >(

And you know, it's not my Asian friends or my black friends who have been bitching about this, so I do think Angry White People are overreacting.

I actually haven't seen the show XD;;; but when LJ was erupting with raaaaage over this I looked it up and was confused. Yeah, I saw some characters should be darker, but it was really not all that obvious to someone not familiar with the show. ^^; I just think there's a lot more socially relevant things to get mad over other than some dumb movie.

Honestly now I don't even wanna watch the show, because I don't wanna deal with these crazy fans. :(

Everyone who's voiced a dissenting opinion has been struck down. It's stupid, and childish.

I think I've seen a couple of concerned Asian people or people of Asian heritage, and a flock of "must-be-politically-correct" white people who are nodding and cheering and raising pitchforks if need be. I'm really concerned as to the amount of people who are really supporting this movement and the people who are supporting it because it's what everybody else is doing: if they do it, they'll show off that they are great educated sensitive people, and if they don't, they'll be branded racist.

But yeah--what I was really here to say was that you should really not let the fandom get to you. ;) I think the thing about fandoms is that you must get into them before they go batshit insane, and it's kinda late now. But Avatar: The Last Airbender really is a great series, exceeding expectations, about the best shows over the last years. You really shouldn't miss it. :3

I feel like if people are looking for it, ANYTHING can be racist. I mean sure, it's messed up that they decided to call for a Caucasian casting when the original story revolves around Asian and Inuit influenced *fantasy* cultures but it's not the first time that hollywood has done that, and it's not going to be the last. I get the anger over it, I really do, but in the end, it's still a made up story and no one is forcing ANYONE to watch that interpretation of it... And while we're on the subject, don't you just love when something gets 'whitewashed' how people are outraged about the difference, but then when they change someone's race from white to anything else, no one cares (only thing that comes to mind is Halle Berry as Catwoman XDDD)?!

I don't want to see it because Zuko is sexy and the guy casted as him does not please me u_u

ps - I think your tl;dr was longer xD

I think the wording was "Caucasian or other" in the casting call. But isn't that what they always do? I don't get why people are raising such a huge racket over this. I don't mean to just be an asshole and tell people to grow thicker skin, but it's just happened before. Sure we must do something to fix it, but what's with the calling people stupid for still wanting to see the movie aaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Yeah what. I mean the guy's not ugly but so... disappointing... that was Zuko, seriously!

hahaha yes it is. orz
