The Black girls all had their places, and they knew them well. Narcissa was the baby whom everyone loved with their mother’s golden hair, while Andromeda was the trouble maker, the rebel, who just wanted to prove that they didn’t really love her. Bellatrix...Bellatrix was in the same moment, her father’s pride and joy and a constant failure, just by the nature of her gender.

When Cygnus gave up on having a son, he turned to Bellatrix as the replacement. As a child, she wanted nothing more to please him, but the impossibility of that formed a sort of dangerous dichotomy in her mind. It was like she was constantly staring in a fuzzy mirror at a picture of herself, and yet, could never quite focus on the picture.

She barely noticed when it happened at first, but she found herself staring at Alice Prewett over potions. It was odd, rather than feeling fuzzy or unsure, it was as if everything had come into focus at that moment and she didn’t know why, as if the Prewett girl was somehow reflecting herself back at her. Everything felt different somehow, and she didn’t know why.

She tossed and turned over it for days, trying to figure out why or how. After all, The Prewetts were Gryffindors, and only a step up from blood-traitors. Finally, she decided that she didn’t care, and staring wasn’t enough.

Bellatrix cornered Her in the hallway one night, and she reflected for a moment about why she always thought of Alice as Her, but before she could dig too deeply, she pressed her against the wall and kissed her, inundated with a smell that reminded her of sunshine and daises and warm green grasses.

Alice was startled, and before she even realised it she was kissing her back. When it broke, she looked up, doe eyes wide. “Why?” She asked simply, looking up at the taller Slytherin girl.

Bellatrix stared for a moment, watching herself reflected in perfect focus in Alice’s eyes, her fingers tingling and senses oddly sharp. “Because you make me feel human again.” even as she said it, she wondered when she had ever felt this real, and kissed Her again.
