I definately applaud that guy. When a shooter came into our mall did the US Army soldiers who were there for recruiting do a damn thing about a guy with an AK-47 spraying bullets? No, they ran and one got shot in the knee in the process. The guys from Dick's Sporting Goods? Cornered the guy when he ran out of ammo and pinned the guy to the floor until the police came. The mall security? Out the door before the first shots rang out.
I'm not saying in the same situation I would have been able to tackle a big strong guy. I'm just not physically able to do that and to try would only endanger myself and maybe others. However, keeping a level head in emergencies is important and I find many people don't even bother to do that. I heard of a woman who had witnessed a stabbing and she didn't even call 911. In her hysteria, she forgot she had a charged cell phone.
The problem is that if you have a guy with a gun and you have no gun, you're in a pretty low probability of success endeavour. That's a technical way of saying "you're fucked". The army guys bolted because they had an opportunity to bolt and no opportunity to counter. If he had ran his magazine dry in front of the Army guys, I bet things would have been slightly different.
Hat tip to the Dick's dudes, though. If you have no weapon, playing dead/invisible and rushing during a reload is probably your best bet.
