Beaver taking over!

This morning saw the third official expotition of my off-beat office's hiking club. It's my second hike; I was out of town for their one-day charge up the highest peak in the county. Today, we picked a slightly less intense scramble up a slope across the valley

My visit to the National Zoo is not complete without a visit to the beaver enclosure.

Cutting timber with their teeth - I'm still trying to get my head around that. We saw fresh stumps with wood chips, even as though they'd come out of a mulcher, and at least three lodges and a couple of dams. They've reshaped a good chunk of the hillside It's impressive.
