Three nights ago, the enemy troops attacked the Royal Army from the sky and the bushes, burning down the campsite as though it was merely a piece of parchment. The straightforward intrusion shouldn't have been much of a surprise, considering the underlying animosity between the Kim kingdom and the neighbouring Jo kingdom. Yet, his fellow-comrades posted on the West Border were easily defeated and taken along as prisoners of war.
Commander Han immediately called for a gathering, setting out a strategy in which most of the soldiers under his command had to move out to the actual battlefield and gave him, captain Lee Sungmin, the honor to lead them. The team was given an extra hour to pack their belongings and say goodbye to love ones before the official set out.
Mother clung onto his shoulder while father slowly packed his bag for him. Moments like this made him realize how short his life was going to get once he pulled out the sword out of its sheath to fight the enemy.
"It's a good thing you're not committed or else I'll lose a sister-in-law in just a few days, "Sungjin, his younger brother, had said.
"I commit only to the princess," Sungmin reacted determinedly, prying mother's hands from his battle uniform to pick up his lovable sword. His brother called him crazy. Something inside his head was probably not connected at all when Sungmin confessed he would like to meet the feisty Princess before going to the upcoming battle.
The princess didn't allow anyone to come close to her, save for her ruthless brother, the Crown Prince. So she stayed an enigma even in her own palace. Suitors all over the country had traveled from the safety of their homelands to meet the rumored beautiful princess. Unfortunately, all of them were either turned down or outwitted by the Crown Prince's intelligence.
Sungmin graciously resigned his fate to forever serve her highness--that's the knight's job anyway. However, like all her suitors, a small spark of hope relied on an unbiased thought that perhaps the princess would fall for him. Just one spark.
Commander Han didn't seem to find his request to see the princess that favorable. Such trivialities cloud any reason of fighting in name of his Majesty. He sent Sungmin to the prince's chambers instead. At least getting a quick wake-up call from the prince's sharp tongue would be enough to keep Sungmin's mind from floating back and forth to la-la land, the Commander had hummed to himself with his brows creased in worry. If he were lucky, captain Lee Sungmin would make it to the battlefield with a few nail scratches and healing scars--courtesy from the Crown Prince himself.
The prince looked unimpressed as soon as the captain reported in front of him with a low bow. "Your highness."
Waving a vague hand around to dismiss everyone attending his needs, the prince languidly slid down from his throne and moved towards the shorted captain. He let out a derisive snort as he studied the soldier in his maillot.
"What makes you think her highness would like to meet you, Captain? Her highness knows not of your existence, just the same as all the others who hounded these grounds to woo her over."
The blow was immediate as expected, hard-edged and skillful--almost comparable to a rusty sword driven into one's flesh. It made matters worse when he thought back of the time the prince had first wielded a sword against him, requesting a challenge for whatever reasons Sungmin couldn't think of. The prince had singlehandedly brought him down on his knees with a few swift moves that conflicted with his mentor's ideals. Dirty--was the word.
"Your highness. It's not a matter of liking or disliking me,"
The prince shot him a glare, his thick eyebrows creased together. "Silence!" he snapped.
Sungmin dropped his stance further for an apologetic bow. "Forgive me, your highness,"
"You're so pathetic, soldier,"
Sungmin almost hissed at the insult directed to him. If he weren't the Crown Prince, Sungmin would have cut the man into pieces for defying -his- title.
"However-," the prince railed off, hinting at something unexpectedly gentle as he paused to welcome a silence Sungmin wasn't used to associating the sharp-tongued prince with.
"Take this!" High highness ordered and dangled a golden necklace with a beautifully-crafted locket in front of his face.
"Sire?"
The prince wasn't looking at him when Sungmin eyes shot up in surprise to regard the prince before admiring the shining locket in awe.
"Her highness wants you to wear this," A snort. "For luck."
"You should have told him the truth, honorable brother,"
Gentle fingertips danced across his scalp, drawing invisible shapes and figures as he stayed resting his head on soft, soft thighs.
"He wouldn't have accepted it any other way," was his muffled reply, his own face was buried between the endless tresses and frills of his sister's dress.
"You can be so childish, Heechul," his sister let out a gaily laughter.
In the far ends of the balcony a loud horn signaled the beginning of a war.

hereSummary: Years ago, when he was still a child breaching slowly over the edge to become a man, he had only one close friend--a quiet beautiful friend, Jungsu, the school founder's youngest son--the one who is forever cemented within the gardens of the campus.
The small village had changed a lot since he last remembered. Large buildings stuck out among the smaller community houses, small convenience stores were traded off for business centers and shopping malls, even his old school received a new look and extra buildings. The high-pitched sound of giggling high-school girls made him look over his shoulder out of curiosity. One of them suddenly gasped, giggling behind her hands and tried to hide behind her schoolbooks.
Cute. He had a slight suspicion they were talking about him or maybe--he looked around--they were stalking that tall guy wearing the same uniform of theirs at table fourteen. Years ago he had been in those shoes before, being watched and gossiped about. Pushing back the chair, he stood up with a grace that had long abandoned him, flashed a smile to the girls' direction--apologetically, when they looked up in alarm--and carefully made his way down the terrace of the campus canteen.
The principal has recently laid out a path which led to the campus' lair of flowers. A sea of colors greeted him--red, yellow, blue, multi-colors--and shy couples in the shades. Once upon a time this place use to function as a hiding nest for rebellious students; it was a place where no one cared about rules or grades.
His shoes made clicking sounds as he strolled down the path, disturbing the natural twitters of birds' singing and leaves rustling. The path led towards a small fountain, and --if he remembered correctly-- a lone marble statue as well. After all these years it was still standing there, as elegant and quiet as the day he had last bid his farewell. Ignoring the vines and wild flowers, he reached out his hand to touch the frozen face, caressing the cold surface and smiled.
"Hello, my friend. I apologize for making you wait so long."
Years ago, when he was still a child breaching slowly over the edge to become a man, he had only one close friend--a quiet beautiful friend, Jungsu, the school founder's youngest son--the one who is forever cemented within the gardens of the campus.
-I want you to stay forever- In his mind he imagined Jungsu's plea. In his mind he heard the suppressed sobs.
"This time, I promise I'll be with you in eternity," He murmured to the statue, proceeding to tear the vines, wild plants and other things off the beautiful statue.
~I'm sorry for keeping you to myself, Kibummie~
It's okay, hyung. I don't mind.
