Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 & 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 & 7 Chapter 8 Hankyung can never forget one particular summer he’d had in his life.
That summer, Hankyung had accepted the fact that Siwon had strangely managed to stay away from him for almost two years.
But still, Hankyung found it hard to adapt to life without Siwon’s constant presence. He hadn’t realized his feelings toward Siwon yet at that time. But he knew that there was a hole gaping wider and wider inside him with every minute passed.
He was in second year of high school already and he had gotten few friends. So, he tried to pass each day by hanging out with them, or stayed at home, doing things with his mother, or simply playing piano whole day long, hoping things would go back to the way it was, where Siwon would come home and approach the piano and him and Siwon would join Hankyung’s singing with his beautiful voice. More than often Siwon will disturb his concentration by making weird faces while Hankyung tried to play along and hold his laughter but failed anyway. And Siwon would smack him lightly on the head, pouting, and they would end up playfully wrestling on the floor.
But his hope was in vain. Siwon stayed out of home everyday and when he finally came home, it was in ungodly hour and Hankyung had slept already. The next morning, Siwon would leave before Hankyung woke up and no one, not even Min Woo, knew when he would be home again.
Hankyung’s mother once asked Min Woo to advice Siwon on this behavior of him, but Min Woo brushed her off gently by saying that it was Siwon’s time to do things like this.
Min Woo said he wasn’t worried because he had faith in Siwon and told the rest of the family to let this things go.
So things went on the way it was.
And Hankyung continued to find ways to entertain himself to forget Siwon’s absence. But mostly he just stayed at home, accompanying his mother doing her gardening thing, or just sat around with her, chatting about every little thing.
Being with his mother consoled Hankyung a lot. Despite his lack of attraction in girls his age, being with his mother was amazingly relaxing and fun.
Hankyung loves his mother very much and shared a very tight bond with her. His mother seemed to understand Hankyung’s sadness but Hankyung knew there was nothing she can do.
Min Woo’s words are law in the family.
And Hankyung also knew that lately his mother felt lonely because Min Woo’s workloads seemed to be increasing and he too, just like Siwon, was rarely home.
So Hankyung and his mother found comfort on each other, sharing bonds deeper than they used to be, and for a while, Hankyung thought he could make it without Siwon beside him.
Until his mother got sick.
Apparently her routine headache became worse and worse that she decided to stop hiding it from her family and asked Min Woo to bring her to a doctor. Some tests were done on her, and when the result was out, Hankyung felt so shocked and sad and didn’t know what to do because it turned out that his mother was diagnosed of having brain cancer, and it’s already in second stadium of the sickness phase.
In a short period of time, Hankyung’s world got darker and darker.
The doctor said that his mother needed intensive treatments as soon as possible but that would cost a fortune. And that’s how Hankyung’s biggest misery began.
Hankyung can still picture that day as if it was yesterday.
That day, it was only him and Min Woo at home. His mother was staying in the hospital until the treatment on her was decided and Siwon hadn’t been home since days ago.
Hankyung remembered Min Woo asked for him in his study. Rushing, thinking that there was some development on his mom’s condition that Min Woo wanted to share with him; Hankyung entered the study only to be greeted with a smile from Min Woo who was sitting behind his desk. Hankyung felt clueless for a while, but then Min Woo told him to sit.
“How are you holding up, Hankyung?” Min Woo asked after Hankyung had taken a seat.
Hankyung was a bit taken aback by the sudden question.
“Not that good, Father.”
And then for a long time, Min Woo did nothing but stared at him. Hankyung fidgeted on his seat, uncomfortable under the gaze and couldn’t help but think that there was something wrong.
“Tell me, Hankyung. How long have we been a family?” Min Woo finally said.
Hankyung was confused. “Umm, it has been almost ten years now. I think.”
Min Woo nodded. “So, it has, apparently. I’ve taken care of you and your mother through all these years. Well, it’s a given, considering that I’ve married your mother.”
Min Woo lay back onto his chair. Hankyung’s eyes followed his move questioningly, curious as to where this conversation lead to.
“This time, however, I can’t do that kind of thing anymore. I can’t help your mother.”
Hearing this, Hankyung was confused even more. “Wh… What do you mean, Father?”
Min Woo once again stared at Hankyung before answering. “Your mother’s treatment would cost me millions of won. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
Hankyung frowned deeper and felt a panic started rising inside him. “But mother needs it. She’ll die if she didn’t get the treatment, right? Why can’t you do that? I beg you! She’s your wife, isn’t she?”
Min Woo chuckled. Hankyung got even more confused with each and every Min Woo’s reaction, because this kind of reaction was one that Hankyung never expected his father to show. Min Woo’s words and acts were so disturbingly cold that Hankyung could feel a fear started growing in him.
“I’ll tell you what.” Min Woo leaned forward and looked at Hankyung straight in the eyes. “I’ll do it. I’ll give every treatment there is in this world for your mother, even if it costs me my entire fortune.”
Hankyung couldn’t bring himself to cheer up at what Min Woo had just said, because he sensed something bad was coming. Hankyung just knew that somehow, there’d be some strings attached. His worry was proven to be true at hearing Min Woo’s next words.
“In return, you have to sleep with me.”
Speechless and shocked, Hankyung’s eyes widen. “W… What?”
“You heard me. I’ll pay each and every treatment that your mother needs, but you have to let me do whatever I want to you. It’s just that simple.”
Hankyung’s back was now pressed to the chair. Fear slowly crept in him. “But father, I’m your son!”
At Hankyung’s words, Min Woo’s face turned darker and suddenly he looked as if he carries the burden of the world. “Don’t you think I know that? Besides, is that matter?”
Min Woo’s laughing and it sounded strange and bitter in Hankyung’s ear and he found he couldn’t even give a decent answer to those bizarre questions. He was just too dumbfounded with the whole thing.
Seeing Hankyung looked dumbstruck, Min Woo sighed. He averted his eyes from Hankyung and instead stared at the view outside the window. It was raining a bit outside, and from the looks of it, a heavy rain would occurred sometime this day. Raindrops were splattering on the porch outside, making it wet in short time.
“You see, Hankyung. All these years, I assumed you must have understood how I feel already. I love your mother. But my love for her can’t be compared with how I feel for you. I married with her because of you. Because I knew that by doing so, I’ll get to have you within my reach.” Min Woo’s gaze returned to Hankyung. His smile was eerie and Hankyung couldn’t help but shuddered at him. “When I saw you for the first time, you looked so angelic and beautiful that I couldn’t help but fell hard for you.”
Hankyung tried to ignore how Min Woo’s eyes glazed when he said it. He had been disturbed enough by the fact that the first time Min Woo met him, the time when he claimed he had fallen in love to Hankyung, it was only a few days after his 6th birthday.
Hankyung felt a wave of nausea began to form in his stomach.
Suddenly Min Woo stood up, and walked towards Hankyung. Quickly, he grabbed Hankyung by his shoulders with his two hands and made him stood up too. Finally leveled with Hankyung, Min Woo looked straight into Hankyung’s eyes. His eyes are glowing strangely, it’s almost maniacal, and Hankyung felt his fear doubled at Min Woo’s hot breath on his face.
“Hankyung, I love you. I love you so much that sometimes I couldn’t control myself. I’ve loved you for so long. And as time passed, I’ve become more enamored by you. I want to have you. I want to have you now.”
After he said it, he ducked his head and suddenly Hankyung could feel Min Woo’s cold lips on his neck and it took all of him to not punch Min Woo right then.
It was not that Hankyung was that weak to the point of not be able to work himself off Min Woo’s grip, but he just felt so confused and decided to take things calmly because this: was madness.
And if anything, Hankyung never thought that his stepfather was capable for this kind of madness. But he could feel his skin starting to prickle unpleasantly so he tried to shrug Min Woo off. “Father, stop it! What are you doing?!”
But Min Woo just wouldn’t let go. Instead he put even more strength in his hands that grabbed Hankyung’s shoulder, causing Hankyung to grimace in pain, and then whispered in Hankyung’s ear. “Are you sure you want me to stop? Don’t you want to help you mother?”
His words stilled the struggling Hankyung. Hankyung could feel Min Woo’s mouth on his neck forming a smile.
Suddenly, Hankyung felt the fear that had coiled in his stomach for the last few moments starting to grow uncontrollably. He realized, right then, that this was serious. His father had lost his mind and his threat was real. Hankyung couldn’t suppress a shudder that ran through his body at hearing Min Woo’s next words.
“Just do what I say, Hankyung. And your mother will be just fine. You’ll find this enjoyable too, I believe. I’ll give you pleasure that you’ve never felt before.”
Hankyung thought that this situation just wasn’t fair, because he could feel his struggle started to wear off after Min Woo said it.
If Min Woo had decided not to spend even one won on his mother’s treatment, he would. That, at least Hankyung knew.
Min Woo is a stern person and he’ll do anything to make sure the victory was his. That’s part of the reason behind him owning a major enterprise in America with countless rivals; all put their respects and fears for him.
Right then, with Min Woo’s grips tight on him, Hankyung was scared shitless for he knew exactly what Min Woo had in store for him.
But his mother was lying on hospital bed right now, pretty much in pain. And if nothing was done on her, she’ll die. If she dies then Hankyung would be all alone in this world.
Won’t he?
And suddenly, the fears of being alone in the world overrode his fear for Min Woo.
He couldn’t afford to lose his mother now. Siwon had abandoned him and his mother was all he had left. Eun Hwa was a good person and she deserved a chance to live her life longer.
Right now, the only one who could save her is Hankyung.
Min Woo seemed to sense his surrender. Hankyung could feel him, sickeningly gently, letting go of his iron grips on Hankyung and slowly led Hankyung by hands to the nearest sofa in the room where he made Hankyung lay on.
At that point, Hankyung had been a total mess. His stomach was hurt because of the fear clutching tightly and won’t let go. His head was spinning. And he couldn’t help it when tears started to form in his eyes.
All the while he could hear Min Woo chanting words that he must’ve thought would calm Hankyung, saying ‘Sssh…. It’s okay‘ and ‘Just relax and let me take care of you’ and ‘There, you’re such a good boy’ and ‘I love you Hankyung’.
Yet, it only resulted on Hankyung being even tenser and grabbed the side of the sofa harder.
When finally Min Woo laid his hands on his now bare chest, Hankyung threw his head to the side, closed his eyes tightly, and wished hard for unconsciousness to take hold on him.
That first time, Hankyung was barely 17.
It was raining lightly outside and summer had just begun. To some people, it’s a beginning of another amazing life. But to Hankyung, that summer marked the end of his innocence, and somehow, he knew that his life would never be the same again.
