1 There were a lot of things that Kibum began to notice. Not that he was oblivious before, he just simply didn’t care.
For example, those signs above the train double seats saying that they were reserved for the elderly, pregnant women and the disabled.
He boarded the train like any other mornings, sitting himself at the corner seats just by the door. He shut his eyes and turned up the volume of his mp3 player, the music blaring into his ears.
That lasted for a full ten minutes when an earphone was tugged free, the noises of the train compartment intruded his left hearing. Kibum opened his eyes annoyed and ready to kill the person with his glare. That’s when Kim Jongwoon entered his vision looking freshly showered and smelling of freshly brewed coffee.
“Kibum shii, please give up your seat.” Kibum stared blankly at him and spoke before his mind could fully process what had been said.
“What?”
“You’re not letting this grandma stand her whole journey are you?” That’s when he realized the old lady hunching over her cane heavily, prompting him to shoot off shuffling into the tiny space between Jongwoon and her.
“Granny, have a seat please,” Kibum said apologetically as he carefully guided her into it. In that moment, he noticed the shiny board, frowning as he ignored the snickers coming from Jongwoon. He wondered how he had missed that the whole time he took this train.
“Thank you so much young man,” Kibum reverted his attention back to her and smiled.
“That’s okay granny,” Kibum replied acutely aware of Jongwoon’s stare.
“Like what you see?” Kibum whispered lowering his head to his ear that was sporting a cross earring, the damp hair at the base of his neck smelling sweet. Jongwoon shifted his head slightly that his lips nearly brushed his ear.
“It’s refreshing seeing a sincere smile for once,” he answered thoughtfully.
Or what about that kid who had been hanging around that old tree just before the bridge across the river?
They walked in silence after they got off the train. He didn’t take any notice of the girls that had greeted him with adorations. He just quietly trailed behind the older boy pondering over what he had said.
Sincerity.
He caught sight of the girl he had dumped a few months back, walking alone looking lonely. Had there ever been a time he was sincere with her? Had he ever been sincere with all those girls that he couldn’t even remember half of their names?
“Kibum shii.” He stopped dead at his name being called out. Jongwoon had stopped walking and was just standing there with his back facing him.
“Don’t walk behind me, I can feel you staring,” he said and resumed walking. Kibum picked up his pace and fall in beside the older boy, his strides matching his.
“I didn’t know we take the same train,” Kibum said to him and Jongwoon smirked.
“Go figure. It’s just like how you’ve never noticed that signboard on the train,” he said and pointed outwards before adding, “I bet that you didn’t even notice that kid over there looking up longingly for his kite stuck in that tree.”
“I’ve seen him before you pointed him out to me,” Kibum answered frowning slightly feeling a little nettled. He wasn’t blind.
“For two weeks?” Jongwoon asked him that smirk still gracing his lips. Kibum’s eyes rounded in surprise. Two weeks? Was that kite really that important?
Kibum steered off course and stepped onto the grassy lawn drawing closer to the young boy.
“Hey kid, what’s wrong?” Kibum asked startling the boy at the same time. The boy sighed sadly and pointed up to the colorful kite.
“I can’t get it down. My dad was the one who always get it down for me,” he told him.
“So why didn’t you get your dad to take it down for you?” Kibum questioned looking at the tears that was slowly forming in the little guy’s eyes.
“He’s not around anymore,” he replied and swiped away the tears that were threatening to fall. Kibum narrowed his eyes regarding the boy thoughtfully. He didn’t want to ask what happened, he didn’t want to intrude but the kite was clearly a piece of a memory and he felt compelled to give it back to him.
“What are you doing hyung?” the kid asked alarmed tugging on his hand.
“What does it look like? I’m gonna get it back for you.”
“But the tree is dead and could be rotting. It’s dangerous!” he wailed. Kibum reached down and ruffled his hair.
“I’ll be fine kid,” he said and started climbing, placing his hands and feet cautiously making his way up to that branch. Kibum clenched his jaws. The branch that had snagged the kite looked rotted but he climbed on it anyway, scooting slowly towards it laying flat on his stomach now. The branch groaned under his weight as his fingers nimbly untangled the knotted strings pulling it free from its claws and started back down again. He didn’t kill himself.
The boy beamed up to him thanking happily as he took the kite from his dusty hands. He watched the boy hugged it close to his chest.
“Take care of it okay,” Kibum told him ruffling his head as he walked away. He saw Jongwoon leaning against the railings of the bridge observing him and a slow smirk climbed up his lips giving him a mock salute before sauntering away.
There was certainly no excuse for missing the hard work that middle aged man put into to beautify the school.
Kibum lagged behind his classmates following behind them at a snail pace to the field for P.E. The afternoon was warm with a mild breeze that all he could think was cutting class and sleep under that tree behind their school. The idea was really enticing to his mind. Especially when all they’re going to do was run around the track.
He had already taken a step back when he saw Jongwoon coming out of the science lab carrying a tray of what looked like lots of small potted flowers.
‘What was he doing?’ he thought to himself watching the figure walking to a small garden patch a few feet away from the building. His legs decided to carry him to where he was.
“What are you doing?” he asked crouching next to him.
“Cutting P.E Kibum shii?” Jongwoon answered him with a question as he dug the moist ground with a spade.
“Aren’t you doing the same thing?” he countered marveling at the small hands that worked fastidiously.
“Third years are granted free period,” he said as he patted the soil around the edges of the flower pot he had planted. He smirked, “I bet you didn’t know that too.”
Kibum ignored this. There really were a lot of things that he was ignorant of.
“So you’re hobby is to groom the school?” he asked him amused inducing a velvety laugh from him.
“I have no use for flowers or such. I was just helping out the gardener. His leg’s acting up again,” he explained as he moved on starting the procedure all over again. Kibum rested his chin onto his drawn up knees, contemplating him. He’s never met anyone quite like him.
“Thanks for helping me Yesung ah.” Kibum looked up at the scratchy voice that came closer. He frowned. There was something weird about how the man moved. His eyes instantly trailed down the dirty Bermuda shorts, stopping right at his shoes. The heel of his right shoe was about six inches higher than the other.
“Its fine ajushii, I’m on free period anyway,” Jongwoon replied with a smile and the man turned his attention to him.
“Friend of yours Yesung?” he asked giving him a once over. Kibum’s lips hitched up slightly at a corner attempting a polite smile.
“Him? Nah.. he’s just some brat I got to know yesterday,” he replied much to Kibum’s annoyance. Was that what he saw?
“Yesung… nice name,” Kibum said as he watched the man limped off somewhere after the both of them chatted for a bit.
“Ahh… but you’re not allowed to call me that,” he told him as he continued where he left off.
“Because we’re not friends?” Kibum asked feeling that annoyance again.
“I’ve never thought you would talk a lot Kibum shii,” Jongwoon said pushing him the tray and he didn’t ask anymore.
“Shit,” Kibum muttered to himself after all that went through his mind.
“What’s wrong?” Shiwon asked beside him sipping on a cold drink looking curiously at him.
‘I think I’m in love,’ his mind answered as he found Jongwoon entering the cafeteria after the last school bell rang. Their eyes met briefly and that smirk played on his lips turning away as he and his friends sat down at a table across the complex.
In love… How did that happen in a space of two days since he met him?
“Kibum ah, you alright?” Shiwon nudged him looking slightly concerned. Kibum pulled away from his staring and nodded to his friend just as Kyuhyun drag out a chair and plopped down on it.
“Kibum hyung, a couple of guys are waiting for you outside the school gates,” Kyuhyun informed him.
“A couple of guys?” Shiwon questioned his forehead crinkling in a frown glancing at him accusingly. “What did you do?”
They must be here because he had stolen a girlfriend he thought recalling the night at the club.
“Yah! I’m asking you a question,” Shiwon said anxiously tapping his cheek lightly. Kibum swiped his hand away and stood up.
“It’s okay, I was the one who called them over,” he replied patting his shoulder assure and headed out to the main gates.
