summary: it's a one-in-a-ten-million chance that they meet again, but they do.

he is a photographer, and his photos tell more words than hangeng could have thought possible when he first met him, his eyes hidden by designer sunglasses and an holga held up to his face.

hangeng blinks when the stranger in front of him says click and he doesn’t know what memorized phrase to reply with when the man turns back around in his seat on the train and he is met with a ray of sunlight bouncing off of hair as red as the silk comforter he bought in shanghai and brought with him to this foreign country. because he doesn’t know what to say, he doesn’t say anything and closes his mouth and folds in his hands in his lap, staring out the window.

(but he’s actually just staring at the photographer’s ponytail)

and he very nearly misses his stop, but hangeng manages to slide through the doors. he shoulders his bag, glancing behind him to see if the train has sped off.

the next time he meets him (it’s unbelievable that he does, because that’s a one in ten million chance), hangeng is stumbling over his korean and trying to order a coffee, and the redheaded photographer who has only said click steps in front of him at the counter and repeats what he was trying to say to the confused barista. hangeng simply melts on the inside from embarrassment, and his acquaintance turns to him and says something about his name and heechul, so hangeng smiles and states his name, which heechul repeats to the boy behind the counter. the boy rings up his total and hangeng fumbles with his wallet before putting the cash down, getting his change and sliding his hands around the fresh mug of coffee.

he turns and goes and sits down, and as fast as he looks up, heechul is sitting there, his hair in that same ponytail and his bangs in his eyes; he’s got a different camera today, and it’s sitting on the(ir) table. hangeng isn’t quite sure what to say, so he looks down into his coffee, and whatever he was about to say is cut off as heechul leans across the table, holds his camera up and says click.

“thanks,” heechul adds when he sets his camera back into his lap and tips back his own steaming mug of something, blowing the steam towards hangeng. “so, where are you from,” he starts, and leaves hangeng to finish, so he tells his new companion that he’s from china, he’s twenty-one and he’s a dancer.

heechul is from gangwon, he’s twenty-two and he’s a photographer, hangeng soon learns, and he gives him his card while he gives heechul his number. there is a mutual agreement to meet at the coffee shop again next week, and this time, hangeng can order for himself.

it isn’t until they’ve known each other for a month that hangeng sees heechul’s photos and that’s on the bulletin board in the shop and heechul has the grace to say it’s nothing; how about you come to my show next saturday. he reaches into his bag and pulls out another card (it’s red, like his hair), the lettering saying something about KIM HEECHUL: LESSONS (A STUDY IN LIFE) and hangeng tucks it into his pocket, saying yes, yes, i will.

he has to admit that he’s impressed when he walks into the gallery (and he feels a little underdressed in his black slacks and polo), and he looks for the photographer with the bright red hair and only finds pretty (but not as pretty as kim heechul) people with flutes of champagne gathered around black and white frames. however, his vision is quickly blocked with red, red, lucky red hair and heechul is babbling on about how glad he is that he could come, and have you met siwon? i think you’d like him.

it turns out that he has indeed met siwon before and he has also met eunhyuk and donghae and shindong in his dance classes, and sungmin has been around when he was in the studio, practicing his forms. they’re all around his age and very nice guys and hangeng soon meets zhou mi (or, as heechul insists, seasoning) and he is glad, oh-so-glad to be have a full conversation in mandarin, but he doesn’t notice the fact that heechul is sulking (he’s later told by sungmin it’s because heechul’s jealous that he’s not the only one to talk to him anymore, but heechul isn’t going to admit it).

hangeng is shocked when he sees the picture of him from their first meeting on the train, and he looks around for heechul, and smiles to himself, before turning back to zhou mi, who is grinning and can tell that Something is Up.

soon after heechul’s exhibition, hangeng and heechul end up in heechul’s apartment, drunk, and it’s two AM when heechul announces that he is gay. hangeng doesn’t care, so he just pours himself another cup of soju and nods.

it’s only when he’s at another one of heechul’s showings that he realizes that heechul takes a lot of pictures of him, so he stops and thinks, and mulls over the fact that he really doesn’t mind.

in december, they sit on a bench in front of the han river and tell each other things. heechul may or may not have told hangeng that he really, really likes him, and hangeng may or may not have heard him correctly, but hangeng definitely did take a deep breath and kiss heechul.

it’s still december when heechul’s hand slides into hangeng’s, when they stand up and when heechul’s free hand takes his holga and takes a picture of hangeng’s profile and then a picture of a photographer’s tilted head leaning against a dancer’s.
