Everyone has those moments.
The first day of school always rolls around eventually and unfailingly, year after year. This year, it doesn’t sneak up on Hyukjae like it did in the previous years. He had seen it coming from afar, having spent his summer in his room reading manga and watching porn. So Hyukjae isn’t sure why the first day of school is so surreal to him, because he’s gone through the routine year after year. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that all his teachers this year are particularly monotonous. Or more likely, it had something to do with the new boy in his class.
His name is Lee Donghae, and when he introduces himself, he bows ninety degrees and gives a cheery smile. Hyukjae pays him no mind and continues to text Junsu under the table, so when Donghae sidles up right next to him, Hyukjae is a little surprised.
“Hi, I’m Donghae. What’s your name?”
“Oh, um. I’m Lee Hyukjae,” he replies, eyeing the new boy warily. The kid’s face was a little too close to his, and Hyukjae notices the curvature of Donghae’s eyes as he smiles.
“Nice to meet you, Hyukjae,” Donghae is a tad too enthusiastic for Hyukjae’s taste. The rest of the day, he follows Hyukjae around. They mostly have the same classes, so it shouldn’t have been such an annoyance for Hyukjae, but somehow, he couldn’t shake the jittery feeling he got when Donghae walked close to him, their arms occasionally brushing.
By the end of the day, though, Hyukjae finds out that Donghae isn't so bad--little too happy, yes, but a nice person overall. In any case, Donghae seemed to have attached himself to Hyukjae’s side. Over the next few days, Hyukjae began to notice himself getting attached to Donghae as well. Perhaps it was the way Donghae sometimes burst out laughing at things that weren’t that funny, or how he insisted on the existence of extra-terrestrial entities, or maybe it was just the way he moved in general. The awkward stage apparently decided to skip over Donghae, while Hyukjae was still a mess of skin and bones and long limbs.
Two weeks into their impromptu friendship, Hyukjae invites Donghae to his house. They play video games together for two hours before getting hungry. Hyukjae fishes around in the pantry until he comes upon an unopened box of chocopies. They eat them together, and suddenly, Donghae brushes the side of Hyukjae’s lip. Hyukjae’s mouth is open mid-chew, with traces of marshmallow on his tongue.
“You…uh, you had some crumbs on your face…,” Donghae explains lamely, looking anywhere but Hyukjae’s face.
“Oh. Okay…thanks…,” Hyukjae replies after a good moment of silence. Wordlessly, they get up and retreat upstairs to break the tension hanging in the air with more video games.
For the next few days, there’s an unspoken awkwardness around the pair, although they pretend nothing is wrong. Hyukjae wonders if he’s making a big deal out of a small thing.
A couple days later, Hyukjae is at Donghae’s house. They’re drinking orange juice at the kitchen table and discussing Donghae’s theory that their science teacher is actually an alien. Donghae explains that there’s no way someone could know so much about outer space and be so socially unaware at the same time, but Hyukjae isn’t listening. Instead, he stares at Donghae’s lips. He doesn’t miss the way the corners of his lips curve up ever so slightly, and that the top lip is thinner than the bottom, with a nice M shape to it. And without thinking about it, Hyukjae leans in, placing his mouth on Donghae’s, except Donghae is still talking.
They meet rather awkwardly, Hyukjae’s closed lips in between Donghae’s, which were still open. They’re nose to nose, and both of their eyes are wide open. They retreat simultaneously. Hyukjae begins to stutter.
“I-I’m sorry, I-I don’t know, I just…I’m-,” But he is interrupted by lips on his, and thankfully, this time they come together naturally. He tastes like citrus. Hyukjae freezes up, and he’s pretty sure his heart stops. Donghae begins to tentatively move his lips and brings his hand up to cradle Hyukjae’s cheek. Hyukjae is still unmoving in his chair, but then Donghae gets more confident, and he begins to tentatively reciprocate. Next thing he knows, their tongues are mingling and he’s running his hair through Donghae’s hair and down his back. They draw apart, slightly panting and out of breath. Hyukjae takes one look at Donghae’s disheveled image, with his hair tousled and lips still shining wetly, and bolts, his ears burning and his heart beating.
But when Hyukjae walks home with his fingertips on his lips, he can’t help but to smile.
