045. Smooth, Shindong/Sungmin
Watching Shindong is like watching genius being born. Something that should be outrageous or stupid somehow becomes something beautiful or attractive. The way he moves, most people would say it's smooth. That he has a natural talent for dance even if he doesn't have the typical dancer's body. Sungmin doesn't really mind. He loves his friend. They've known each other for a long time. Longer than Sungmin even wants to think about sometimes.
Watching Sungmin is like seeing a blind man read or a lame man walk. When you think he's down and out, when nothing else could go wrong, Sungmin always rises to meet the challenge. He's never truly at a loss for words but if he finds that the correct ones won't come out, he can rely on his manner and looks to pull him through any problem. Sungmin is the definition of smooth. Smooth baby cheeks, smooth complexion, smooth talker, it's all Shindong thinks about some nights.
It's a cold winter day when the two boys decide they need to spend some time together, 'cause really, they both have very demanding schedules and for friends they don't see each other near enough. It's Sungmin who suggests ice skating and Shindong readily agrees. He couldn't deny the pink boy anything. So they bundle up and Shindong takes Sungmin's smooth hand and they catch a ride to the ice rink.
It's cold and windy but their hats help keep them warm and Shindong thinks, smooth scarf and smooth wind. It flows around them so effortlessly. Sungmin is the first to get his skates on. Waving a challenge at Shindong, he takes off across the ice, barely keeping himself from falling for the first lap until he gets used to the flow of hard metal across smooth ice. Sungmin thinks that skating is much like swimming. The smooth water flowing across smooth skin, much like the way he cuts through the cold winter wind.
It's Shindong's turn to venture out onto the ice. He takes a more cautious approach. Skating was never his forte. However, he can appreciate the joy in skating. The way he effortlessly glides across the rink with barely a push of his skates. It's one of the only times he's ever felt really graceful and light. Not even dancing made him feel this way. As Sungmin slides by him, Shindong can't help but wonder if the experience would be half as wonderful if Sungmin wasn't there.
There's a joy in the way Sungmin skates. It's not the childish joy that many people see in him. It's a beautiful deep joy that emanates from inside. It's very interesting to Shindong who very rarely feels like he emanates joy. But, you never know. He's never really checked to see if he emanates. It's not like it really matters.
Sungmin thinks that Shindong should learn to open up more. Not open up, the way he does on TV or for comedic dances, but truly open up and let him in. He thinks that Shindong is one of those people, those ice people. They look happy and warm and jovial. They talk to everyone and anyone. However, if you talk too much or get to close, eventually you run into a glass wall. You can see them through it but you just can't reach them. It's like seeing your favorite candy lying behind a store window and you know you don't have the money to go buy it.
Sungmin hates that feeling of being denied when he has the ability to pay, figuratively speaking.
The only real question then is how to get Shindong to open up. Sungmin has no problem believing that once he has figured out a strategy he will be able to pull it off. He's just that good. All it takes is some finesse. Now...what would make Shindong open up to him? They've been friends for the longest time since they both came to SM...
Shindong is happily skating around the rink taking his time and enjoying the breeze and feeling of almost flying. Looking around he spots Sungmin easily. They're the only two at the out of the way skating rink at this time of day. Suddenly Shindong is furiously skating towards Sungmin. He's breathing hard even though it feels like he can't breath at all. He reaches Sungmin in a matter of moments. It felt like hours to Shindong.
Sungmin had been pondering what to do about Shindong. Currently he is lying on his side, sliding across the ice with a large Shindong shaped lump attached to him. As they slow down and stop, Sungmin sits up and rubs as his side. "Damn it Shindong! That hurt! What was that for? If you couldn't stop you could of at least warned me before using me as a brake!"
Shindong is still lying on the ice and staring up at Sungmin with wide eyes. He's never had Sungmin's anger directed at him before, not really. Shaking his head he feels the slow anger rise in his chest as the dull pain seeps into this arms and legs. "You idiot! You should watch where you're going! I can't believe you!" Getting up Shindong quickly turns from his friend and stalks over to the benches on the side of the rink.
Pursing his lips Sungmin finally takes stock of his situation. Looking back over where he had been skating and he feels his heart skip a beat. Not 10ft in front of him was the blade repair table. He had been skating head on towards the ice blade repair table. The sharp shiny blades winked at him as he continued to stare at what he could have fallen on or run straight into.
Quickly gathering himself up, he wobbles over to Shindong. Shaking, he reaches out a hand and latches onto the bigger boy.
"I'm so sorry Shindong. I didn't mean what I said. I was not paying attention. Thank you."
Shindong watches warily as Sungmin skates over. The shaking scares him a bit. Upon hearing the words, it makes sense. Sungmin really had no idea what had almost happened until after Shindong had tackled him. Pulling Sungmin into a warm hug, Shindong whispers, "Please be careful Minnie. I don't want to see you get hurt."
Sungmin thinks that for all his smoothness and finesse, it's really his oblivious nature that made a chip in Shindong's smooth glass wall. He hopes that by the end of the year, he will add enough chips to it that it will be more like thin sugar crystals than that intimidating glass wall.
