A/N: Ryeowook is on his deathbed after being in a car accident and he starts to reminisce about the past. He writes a letter to his past love; the letter being something of a goodbye gift and a remembrance of their friendship.

My dearest hyung,

Nowadays I can barely hear the echo of your voice in the back of my mind; slowly fading but not quite forgotten. I've known you since we were little children because we were next door neighbours and we were the best of friends... but now... we don't even talk.

Do you remember playing in the sandbox? Every Wednesday of the week we'd have a playdate together and you would always insist on going to that same sandbox. You always got your way, hyung, but I never really minded because seeing you happy made me happy. I looked forward to every Wednesday that I could play with you... you were my favourite person.

It's been too long since I've seen the twinkle in your eyes, the warmth of your smile and just the way that you looked at me was enough to make me swoon. I remember those days... it must have been in high school; I used to melt even with just a glance from your direction. I would quiver in anticipation as you held me close, your soft lips tenderly caressing mine, soon becoming something more until I screamed in ecstasy. Your teasing eyes would have me begging for more but you would only smile and walk away. We were never really together but you never pushed me away.

It's always been that way with you. Nothing serious ever came out of anything you did; until you met him. Yesung, I think his name was. I was no match for such a handsome man; I could see from the very beginning that he left you breathless without doing much, if anything at all. I envied him for being able to win your love so easily when I had to carefully calculate each and every step that I took, for a wrong move could've easily pushed you away. He won in a few seconds where I failed after trying for years.

It was painful.

It was hard enough to see you with him, let alone having to hear about you being with him as well. "Ryeowookie," you used to say to me with your cute soft voice. "Yesungie is so handsome, isn't he? I really admire him." You were so eager to be with him that you neglected our friendship and spent all your time with him. Was it worth it in the end, hyung? Was it?

I suppose it was... you're married to him now, aren't you? It's been about 15 years now, hasn't it? And it's been about 20 years since I last spoke to you. We grew distant really quickly with this new man in your life... You didn't even invite me to your wedding. But I guess you were saving me the pain of having to go through it. I still loved you back then. Perhaps... you just forgot about me?

Hyung, the reason I'm even writing this letter to you is just to say thank you. Thank you for all the happiness you gave me in the early years of my life. I will probably never see you again so I want to take this opportunity. You were my best friend as well as my first and only love... I miss you.

Goodbye, my love... I'm glad you got to have the happily ever after that you've always wanted.

Forever yours,
Kim Ryeowook

"What's the matter, darling? Why are you crying?" Yesung wrapped his arms around a sobbing mess. "Sungie... I miss him too." The other man handed a folded piece of paper to him. Yesung read it and frowned. "You're mine only, Sungmin and you'll always only be mine. You've made your choice; there's no turning back now."

-flashback-

"Yesungie hyung!" a young boy of about 16 ran up to a dashing man, a few years his senior. They were close family friends and hadn't seen each other in a few months. "I'm so glad you could make it! I want to introduce you to him... I know you'll love him too!" Yesung laughed and pulled the younger of the two into a hug. "Hey, you don't need him any more, now that I'm here, okay?" Sungmin furrowed his eyebrows and pushed the older one away slightly. "What do you mean?" Yesung smiled, not unkindly. "Don't you love me, Sungmin?" Sungmin was slightly taken aback. "You'll have to choose my dear Minnie... me, your amazing hyung or that boy that you happen to live next door to. Choose carefully. Make the wrong choice and you'll never see me again."

-end flashback-

Happily ever afters aren't always perfect.
