Summary: Donghae decides a coffeehouse is the best place to tell Eunhyuk how he really feels.

Warning: You might need a tissue box.

Coffee. Donghae didn’t like coffee. And he knew Eunhyuk wasn’t much of a fan either.
But Kangin told him coffeehouses were the best places to discuss such matters.

So here Donghae was. He arrived an hour early, hoping to sit away his nerves. But he realized that they only worsened the more he waited.

The door swung open and Donghae’s attention immediately shifted. His eyebrows lifted and his jaw slightly dropped, the breath being directly yanked from his very soul. The luminous light of the vibrant day’s sun created an astounding radiant glow behind the literally breathtaking form of Eunhyuk.

Donghae earnestly raised his hand to wave Eunhyuk over. He knew he had the broadest grin on his face, as his cheeks hurt. But he didn’t care. He would suffer the pains of death in order to see those riveting dark eyes focus on him - and only him.

“Donghae, sorry I’m late. The radio broadcast took a little longer than expected.” Eunhyuk took the other seat at the table across from Donghae.

“It’s okay. I haven’t been here for long.” Donghae was engrossed with the way Eunhyuk’s lithe figure gracefully slipped off his jacket with the minor roll of his shoulders. The sun seemed to rightfully latch itself onto Eunhyuk as he was still remarkably glowing within the dimly lit space.

A waitress approached the table, a tablet in hand. “What would you two like?”

Eunhyuk and Donghae both glanced at each other, but Donghae urged Eunhyuk to go first.

“I’m fine. I don’t need anything,” Eunhyuk politely declined, then stared at Donghae to see what he would order.

Donghae nervously blushed under that watchful gaze. “Tea will be good. Thank you.”

To give himself a few extra seconds to relax, he concentrated on the waitress tending to the adjacent table. But when he turned his gaze back to Eunhyuk, his eyes instantly became enthralled with the other’s mouth. Donghae heatedly gulped as he watched the small flick of Eunhyuk’s tongue dampen his full, pink lips.

He didn’t notice his eyes sliding closed, as he found himself emerged into a different setting.

In this new scenery, he was chasing after Eunhyuk through tall columns of dandelions. The other was laughing boisterously, checking over his shoulder every now and then to see how close Donghae was to capturing him. With one final push and a cry of a warrior, Donghae lunged forward with all his faith. He felt his arms wrap around Eunhyuk’s waist, sending them both tumbling into the field where a few flowers padded their fall.

“Ahhh,” Eunhyuk panted. “You caught me.”

Donghae tried to catch his own breath as he sprawled out, staring up at the expanse of the sapphire skies. The mild breeze guided the dandelions to playfully sway about. A grin rested on his face as his hair stuck to his forehead from sweat. “Does this mean I’ve captured your heart too?”

Suddenly Donghae’s vision of clear skies was blocked by the silhouette of Eunhyuk’s head. He had to slightly squint in order to discern that astonishing, warm smile intended just for Donghae.

When Eunhyuk inclined down towards him, Donghae automatically lowered his lashes. The softest pair of lips met his in a tender entanglement of adoration. His hands glided through Eunhyuk’s dark strands, halting at the nape of his neck where he easily led in the other for a more demanding kiss.

After moments of sweet kisses, Eunhyuk pulled away just enough so their lips still brushed.

“You captured my heart a long time ago.”

. . .

There was a quiet clatter of a dish followed by, “Here’s your tea, sir. Enjoy.”

Donghae jumped, startled, and looked around bewildered. But when he realized where he was, and that Eunhyuk was shooting him a concerned look, he sighed and relaxed.

“Sorry. I think I just dozed off right then. Long night,” he laughed awkwardly, utterly embarrassed. He hoped he didn’t do anything strange while… zoning out.

He took a sip of the tea, now contemplating on how to bring about his reason for inviting Eunhyuk here. But Eunhyuk beat him to it.

“Donghae, why’d you want to meet?” Eunhyuk had an imploring expression.

Said person cleared his throat setting the cup back onto the table. He stared down at his hands gripping the tea; his thumbs were tensely tapping it.

“Eunhyuk . . .” he drifted off feeling very lightheaded. This was the very moment he had been preparing for these past several weeks. The next words fell from his mouth. “I think I like you. I mean, I know I like you.”

Donghae sank his teeth uneasily into is bottom lip. He finally looked up at Eunhyuk with sincere eyes. This was it Donghae - your chance to let him know how you feel!

“I don’t know exactly for how long. All I know is sooner or later I kept having these dreams of us together. And…” he didn’t care right now that Eunhyuk’s face was expressionless. “And then I began to have these feelings every time I even neared you. Maybe it’s more than just liking. But now I find myself having certain… urges.” Now he was rambling. “The point is, I asked for you to come here today to ask you this.” Donghae gazed back up at Eunhyuk with a new confidence. “You don’t have to respond now… but could you consider giving me a chance?”

Eunhyuk still seemed to be distant. At least now though there was life behind his eyes as he seemed to be searching the table for answers.

Donghae felt so much more relieved. Now all he had to do was let Eunhyuk think on it. He was sure though, that the other would allow him in.

Yet as life tends to be cruel, his hopes were shattered.

“I can’t.”

Donghae’s eyes grew with a new dread. “What?”

Eunhyuk looked at him with absolution. “I can’t consider it. I’m sorry, but I don’t like you back. And I won’t like you in the future.”

Donghae was at a loss of thought. The only word that rose to his mouth was, “Why?”

Eunhyuk shook his head with a short sigh. Donghae wasn’t certain if it was one of annoyance or one of sympathy. “I can’t explain right now. Just… I should be leaving.”

Any other noise seemed to slowly sink away as Donghae fixated his disbelieving eyes onto the one person he thought he would live his life with. All those visions of him and Eunhyuk amorously rolling underneath layers of sheets murmuring sighs of pleasure began to recede also.

Before him he could only watch as Eunhyuk stood up, tugging on his jacket, and started to walk away. With each retreating step that Eunhyuk took, the tighter Donghae’s chest squeezed at his heart. Was this how it felt when your heart was breaking?

Donghae wouldn’t cry though. That was something he told himself he wouldn’t do if this happened.

When he could no longer see Eunhyuk, cheerful chatter slowly entered his hearing again. He bitterly glanced around the room, solemnly taking in all the blissful couples grinning thoughts of love at each other. Donghae ran a regretful hand through his hair. Now it would be uncomfortable around Eunhyuk.

A rather high laugh interrupted his thoughts. It came from a delighted woman sitting across from a content man. He needed to escape this place. He threw a few bills on the table and jumped up from his chair, heading for the exit.

Out of nowhere, an abrupt blare of an alarming horn followed by an earsplitting screech invaded his ears. Shrill screams of terror echoed through the air. Birds scattered in all directions, while people suddenly scampered to a large huddle.

This strange, ominous sensation twisted in his stomach. His feet at first hesitantly headed to the building crowd, but before long they were frantically moving as fast as they could. As he drew near he coughed from the revolting smell of burnt rubber. He shoved his way through the swarm of bodies, ignoring grunts and curses thrown at him.

No… no…. please don’t let it be what he thought it was…

Suddenly when he came to the clearing, he threw a hand up to his eyes and wrenched back in horror. No… no… he had to be imagining.

Donghae dared to take another glimpse and this time a stricken wail soared from his lungs. His knees buckled beneath him as they crashed down onto the street next to the unconscious body. His head swirled with a harsh dizziness, as he blinked down upon those limbs abnormally distorted in different directions.

His body felt numb. Yet his hand still shook as it cautiously slid underneath the unconscious body’s shoulders to lift it into a gentle cradle. He bent his head down to touch his forehead against the other’s… he didn’t care if blood stained his clothes.

“Hyukjae…” Donghae uttered, his voice tight with an insufferable grief. Stifling tears tenderly formed in his eyes, slowly trailing down the curve of his cheek only to softly drop onto Eunhyuk. The other’s body was already draining of heat.

When he heard a faint groan coming from Eunhyuk, Donghae’s eyes widened with despairing hope. He pulled back to see Eunhyuk’s eyes barely cracking open. “Donghae…” He sounded so feeble.

“Hyukjae,” Donghae responded his face already disfiguring, as he was on the threshold of losing control. There was just so much blood that Donghae could feel his garments sticking to him. “Don’t worry… an ambulance will come and take you to the hospital. You already survived one accident, so you’ll pull through this one.”

Donghae’s insides tore as he forced a reassuring smile, even though every inch of his own aching, grieving body told him he was spattering wishful lies.

But the doubtful flicker in Eunhyuk’s eyes told Donghae all he needed to know. That it wasn’t true - that this time… he wouldn’t make it.

“Hyukjae… don’t do this to me,” Donghae desperately pleaded as violent sobs shuddered from him. “You can’t leave me. You can’t leave us. I… I love you.” As he said this he planted a chaste kiss onto Eunhyuk’s forehead, which was already marred with dried blood.

Eunhyuk’s breaths were already coming out in faltering, raspy pants. His eyes were also brimming with petrified tears. He didn’t want to die.

“…ng..in…” Eunhyuk tried to speak out between those meager gasps fruitlessly clutching onto the last strings of life.

“What’d you say?” Donghae leaned in so his ear was beside Eunhyuk’s mouth.

“Sung…min…” Eunhyuk struggled for breath as he needed to get these words out.

“Sungmin? What about Sungmin?” Through his devastating fear and state of misery, he showed puzzlement at why Eunhyuk was saying that. Did he want Donghae to deliver words of farewell?

“Th-That’s….w-why…” Eunhyuk stuttered out as his body was becoming enveloped into this daunting chill. His eyes were beginning to feel heavy as it was more of a labor for him to breathe. All he wanted to do now was rest. Yes… sleep sounded good. And in this slumber, he knew this agonizing pain that jolted through his entire body would disappear. The only thing was as soon as he would surrender to such an inviting rest, he wouldn’t be with the one who really captured his heart.

“That’s why… I… can’t love you…I love… Sungmin…”

Donghae’s whole body was trembling now. He could only observe in shock and dejection as Eunhyuk’s eyes slowly shut. “Hyukjae… Hyukjae…” He aimlessly shook the other. “Hyukjae!”

Donghae began to shout over and over the other’s name as he shook him harder and harder. He was completely lost in stolen dreams, and rejected love. He didn’t even notice the strong arms grabbing him and tearing him away from the lifeless body.

All he could think of was a surreal, flourishing dandelion field, and a false loving smile meant only for him . . .

“Does this mean I’ve captured your heart, too?”

“You captured my heart a long time ago.”

THE END.

Hope your stomach was twisting with sadness like mine was when I wrote it. @_@

This fic is also dedicated to my lover where Hyukmin can only exist. It's either Hyukmin or 3Lee... no Hyukhae.
