Canon Character and Series: Paula Polestar from Mother 2, or Earthbound.

Position & Ship: The Convoy, Cook [First choice] or Passenger [Second choice]

Appearance:
[Please accept this image accompaniment for clarification: http://travelingorange.com/images/sodistracted.jpg ]
Paula is a vision of youth. She can easily be passed off as someone younger than her without so much as a raised eyebrow. She's your standard doll: a rosy complexion, bright blue eyes, and medium-short blonde hair that she ties back with a ribbon. Paula gravitates towards skirts and blouses, dresses, and prefers items of clothing that sport the color pink. Her collection of hair ribbons is vast, but she prefers her red ones.

Personality:
Paula is the epitome of a pollyanna.  She believes that pots of gold are at every rainbow's end and roses kissed with dew.  (And yes, she'd believe the same of you.)  It's incredibly hard to shake her optimism, even in the face of intergalactic destroyers that would make anyone pee their pants.  [Or in this case, the ever present, very real threat of a war on the horizon.] It's all possible because of a flame glowing bright in her heart called faith, and  gosh does she have a lot of it.  Faith in the world, faith in people, faith in her friends…  If you ever needed someone to believe in you, Paula is the friend you need.  She'll stick by you through thick and thin.

She's the talk of the town in the south side of Bellcius [figuratively speaking], and everyone will tell you that she's the sweetest person you could ever meet.  She's a very kind and nurturing soul.  Having a sunstroke?  She'll be there with a wet towel for your forehead.  Want her to take care of some kids?  She'll gladly do so, and they'll all love her to pieces.  (Well.  Maybe.  The super nice types can be a grate on some kid's nerves, surely.)  She's got a very level head on her shoulders and is not incredibly prone to panicking unless she's in a real pinch.  Hers is the bright and cheery disposition that would make her a really nice girl to take home to your folks.  Always as polite as she can be and rarely ever showing a mean face.  The uptown girl of sorts, only much more down to Earth. She's very modest, just like her name implies.

Paula is like the ultimate of girly girls without all the ditz associated with it in most cases.  [Usually.] She loves the color pink and teddy bears and fights with a frying pan.  Calling her girly is just stating a fact.  While she's not incredibly used to it, Paula knows how to roll with the boys though.  Sort of.  She likes to believe she's good at adapting to being with other poeple, so she'll certainly try her best. Sure boys can be kind of messy and smelly and sometimes they root around trashcans for food but… Alright, maybe she'll never really understand them, but she doesn't expect them to understand hair ribbons or teddy bears either.

She might be switched to "kind and cheerful" most of the time, but that does not mean that she lacks the capacity for anything else. She can be sad. She can be hurt. She can be agitated and she can be annoyed. She can feel everything everyone else can, because she's only human just like anyone else. She's just a little less likely to admit it.

Abilities/Weapons:
She cooks! Often Paula will keep her favorite frying pan with her, since it is also her weapon of choice if she really must get into a fray.

Like Ness, Paula harnesses the strange powers of PSI. It is a unique psychic energy that is quite similar to magic in form, and its methods rely solely on her own psyche. The abilities that a PSI user can develop varies from user to user, but it is unlikely that a whole study would be able to be performed as documented cases are few and far between (to current date there are two [maybe appended as needed based on future apps]).

Where Ness' abilities lie primarily in healing and support, Paula's demonstrate a wider range of offensive maneuvers. She can control fire, ice and (to some degree) lightning. She has a fairly good grasp on them, but she's never really used them for true offensive purposes before. (It's the secret to her even cooking!)

The skill that Paula is "famous" for is her telepathy. She has a real knack for it, potentially being able to contact people she hasn't even met before. (But honestly, that would probably only really happen if she had some sort of connection to them, even if they were friends she had never met.) If Paula ever had something to say privately to someone regarding something, that would surely be the way she did it. Sometimes she can see what others are thinking, though certainly not passively. She needs to be making some sort of link to them. In turn, if they were able, she'd be just as open. A critical note regarding her telepathy is that it is much more effective on other parties when said parties are not experiencing conscious thought. Simply put, it works better when she is contacting someone when they are asleep, or some variation of.

Paula's true power, however, is rooted in that unshakable faith of hers. In desperate hours, its said that her prayers can cause miracles… though whether or not those miracles are truly a benefit is never all that clear. At the very least though, it can stir the hearts and bring people together, and that is perhaps the best miracle of them all.

[[Okay hello! This note is showing up because I realize some of Paula's powers could potentially get a little in the godmode direction and I want to avoid that as much as possible. In regards to her telepathy, I will be putting up a permissions post for who she could talk to that way or for what she could encounter when she touches someone's mind. In regards to her praying, that is definitely something that would be saved for last ditch ordeals [should she ever be in one], and I would either roll a dice or let it be in the hands of a mod or mini mod to decide what happens. The effects are here: http://walkthrough.starmen.net/earthbound/prayerguide.php

Oh god this note is kind of long I'm sorry. If you need me to tweak anything at all, I'll be more than happy to do so!]]

How well can your character hack?:
At the moment, Not at all! Maybe in the future a kind soul will show her what to do, but she'd probably never get better than Easy. The thought would probably never cross her mind!

Weaknesses:
She cannot defend herself physically worth crap. Okay that is kind of over exaggerating it, since she can do a little bit…! But you honestly do not want her in a physical brawl. Frying pans are actually not all that effective, and she is actually quite fragile. Do not hit her she will break.

As much good as it can do, Paula's faith can be a weakness as well. Constantly trying to see the good in everyone and believing that everyone is worth a chance could very likely get her into serious trouble if she doesn't watch herself. While she does have common sense and isn't completely blind to the dangers that trusting people can bring… she trusts people. She trusts them A Lot. What are street smarts????

The above makes her highly susceptible to being kidnapped. I'm just going to put it out there with a guess that she would probably end up kidnapped. Maybe more than once. If you ever think to yourself, "Man I hope my friends never get kidnapped!" then you best keep your eye on Paula.

She is severely technologically challenged. Do not expect her to know how to help you if anything breaks and it is not the hem of your pants. I wouldn't trust her with a proper weapon either. Paula holds the facilities to learn and could become decent at a fair amount of things, but from the get go? She's at a severe disadvantage.

History:
"Listen, have you heard…?"
"About Joseph Falls' magnificent beard?"
"No, you ninny, listen up. They say in the south side, miracles can happen…"

Once upon a time ago in the city of Bellcius, somewhere amongst the hustle and bustle of every day life, a young man and a young woman met by chance. They continued to meet, it turned to courtship, and before anyone knew it they were happily wed. The only thing that could make them happier was the presence of children. (So many children.) The grand plans that they had dreamed up during the late nights came to fruition. From those dreams, the Polestar Day Care was born… as was a baby girl.

That girl was Paula.

She was the sweetest baby a young couple could ask for, especially first time parents. The babe rarely made a fuss, settled down quickly when she did, slept when they put her to bed at night… Paula was the talk of all the young mothers in the area. "How in Reial did you get her to be so calm? We have to know!" And the young Mrs. Polestar would just smile and shake her head, sheepishly explaining it was nothing of her own doing. Paula was just her little miracle.

As the years went on, it became readily apparent that just being a good baby was not the extent of how much of a little miracle Paula was. It was little things at first, like birthday candles never quite going out and the frost on the windows looking far more intricate after Paula left the window than before she sat next to them. Squabbles between children in the daycare never lasted long when Paula was there. Everything came to light the one afternoon that Paula was separated from her parents in the hustle and bustle of one of Bellcius' more populated markets. She had called to them and told them where she was, and all three had been amazed when they found her just where she said.

She had been calling them in their minds, after all.

So it came to be recognized that Paula was a special little lady, though she tried her hardest to deny that there was really anything very special about it. She was still just Paula. No need to make a fuss. But her father had always been ridiculously proud of her, so it wasn't very much of a surprise when they opened the door one day to find that there was a newspaper reporter on their doorstep. And a different one the next day. And the day after that. And the day after that. They just loved hot news, especially when they could couple it with accounts from their neighbors and patrons of the daycare. Paula took to politely declining their questions. She didn't want to be famous. She was just Paula.

Her fame, as far as she knew, stayed rather central to her location. The whispers continued around her. That Paula would grow into great things. Maybe she'd join the military? It was to that particular whisper that Paula would always have to pause, because it would have been a lie if she had ever said she hadn't considered it. As she got older she became more aware of an itch that she needed to scratch. Paula wanted to get out. Needed to get out. It was as if there was something or someone out there in the wide world that was calling her name to join them on their adventures. She wanted to know so badly what that feeling was and where it came from. It felt as though she was separated from a dear group of friends that she longed desperately to see again, even though they were friends she never met.

But she had nothing to go on in regards to finding those friends, so for the time being she contented herself with helping out with the daycare. Watching the children and cooking meals for all of them actually took up quite a bit of time. She was very open with her parents, however, letting them know that someday… Someday she was going to have to set off and figure out what everything meant. She had to have been feeling that way for some sort of reason, and what if it was important?

Then one morning she woke up with a name ringing in her mind, clear as day. Ness. She had to look for a boy named Ness. Her day had come, and Paula did not hesitate. She kissed her mother goodbye and told her father to blow his nose and dry his eyes (why did he have to cry over her so much?). She'd be just fine as long as she knew they were cheering her on. This was something she had to figure out, no matter where it took her.

SAMPLES-
Third Person (roleplay):
Clean up the kitchen, they had said. We'll see how your cooking is once you're done, they had said. Paula cast a wary gaze around the preparation area, taking stock in the damage she needed to put under her control. It certainly was not a pretty sight. Dishes were piled as tall as the top of her head. Unidentified substances were clinging to the counters. Something that looked suspiciously like a fork was stuck into something that looked suspiciously like… nothing Paula could even begin to fathom the identity was. It was bad.

Had it been done on purpose? Paula couldn't stop the thought from entering her mind, but she quickly tried to banish it. If it had, she was just going to have to deal with that. This was supposed to be a trial after all! It shouldn't have come as a surprise if they had such scenarios planned for such things. … That forked was pretty wedged in there though. Something like that took time. How… alarming. But standing around and looking wasn't going to get anything any cleaner! Paula rolled up her sleeves and got right to work, starting with those alarming looking counters. Scrubbing here, scrubbing there.

As time wore on, if someone were to pass by the galley, they'd hear the rather unexpected sound of… someone singing? Was she whistling now? Oh she was whistling while she worked. How appropriately cheesy. It seemed to do the job though, as after a while Paula came through the doors bearing a triumphant smile for anyone that was there to pay attention. The kitchen was open for business.

"Alright! What would people like for lunch?"

First Person (journal):
Alright… I hope I'm working this correctly. Is this working? Oh I hope so. The children were all so much better at these than I was.

Ah, but I'm already off to a bad start! Hello! My name is Paula Polestar! I'm quite new. If you see anyone a little lost, that's probably me. I'm here to help out with the cooking, so please don't hesitate to tell me what you do and don't like to eat! I can't make any promises for anything right now, but in the meantime it can be a first step in getting to know one another! I enjoy a slice of good strawberry cake.
