Day 07 - Your Favorite Piece of Music

Instrumental soundtracks have a way of getting into my soul. I love the intricacies of orchestration, lilting or haunting melodies that tell a story. Even more so when a particular piece is associated with a particular scene, a particular person, particular feeling it brings. This is very very vivid in the world of New Who, made all the much better with Murray Gold's music aided with Ben Foster's impeccable orchestration and conduction makes it oh so glorious. There's a lot of pieces I love, but I've narrowed it to a few I really really really love.

1. Vale Decem (with a bit of The Doctor's Theme from Series 4 at the end)

This may be the most haunting piece Murray Gold's has written up to David's reign as the Doctor. The fact that he added in the Series 4 version of the Doctor's Theme at the end thrills me even more because I LOVE the revamped Doctor's Theme. (Hey hey I got to put two favourite songs at the top of my list!) Vale Decem breaks my heart every time I hear it because there's always the images of the Tenth Doctor painfully, slowly, sadly going through the process of regeneration. It was performed at this year's Doctor Who proms and got a rousing reaction when Ten's regeneration was shown (I think they missed the explodey wodey gold light by a few beats!). And look, Murray Gold even showed us the score: here,
here and here. (I haven't looked properly, I hoped those were posted in the correct order!)

Watch and wibble at the first view that broke hearts of Ten-lovers (including Julie Gardner, yeah) everywhere:

Watching the end where Matty has his first scenes still make my heart ache a bit, because it's "and a new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead" isn't it?

The piece at the beginning of that clip ... well, it is ...

2. Rose's Theme. :D :D :D :D

HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THIS SONG? The first theme for the first New Who companion is a simple melody, soft piano with soft strings, a blend of first meetings and innocence and happiness and love. Every companion that has come after Rose has had a wonderful theme to her name as well - Martha's so haunting, Donna's so filled with vibrancy of Donna, and Amy's reflecting the belief in an imaginary friend - but this has got to be my favourite. Favourite scene with this tune is when the Doctor and Rose were reunited in The Stolen Earth. I tried looking for the video of just that original scene with Rose's Theme but can't for the life of me find it! So here enjoy the Proms 2008 version, the extended 2006 Doctor Who: A Celebration live version, plus some Confidential bits of it and David Tennant talking about how epic it is to run to the person you've been longing to see (or something like that. :p)

3. Doomsday.

Like, duh. Emo-song is emo and angsty and pounding and marvellous. I always love how it sounds equally as poignant and beautiful LIVE.

Here's the live version from 2006, intro-ed by DT. (With the original BBC National Orchestra of Wales, I believe):
