Ness was covered in blue paint again. He saw Paula in the cabin in Peaceful Rest Valley. He walked stiffly over, as, the various layers of paint made it somewhat hard to move.
The key was still stuck in the door of the cell. Ness poked at it.
Paula was screaming. The cage was filling with water. She was drowning! Ness grabbed his bat and SMAAAAAASHED the thing apart. But it was still filling with water. Paula was screaming under the water.
He tried to push in to get her, but the blue paint wouldn't let him wash it off!
Paula heard Ness shout her name. Yet to her, it sounded more out of anger than distress. He was blaming her. Blaming her for the fire. Blaming her for always getting captured. Blaming her for being such a pain and always needing saving and why couldn't she just protect herself?!
"I'm sorry!" she cried. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean it! I'm sorry!" She repeated the mantra. Maybe if she said it enough times, it'd come true.
Skull Kid was wandering aimlessly, desperately trying to find a place to hide and escape all the yelling, angry faces for a little while. Maybe if he found a tree to hide in. Yeah. That would work. Too bad there were nothing but giant candy canes out here (he could have sworn there were trees outside, but...).
It was then that he heard another voice. Oh, no, they found him! He turned and saw another mask, this one the face of a panicked, yellow-haired girl. It was yelling at him to stop.
"Stop? Stop what? I didn't do anything! I didn't do it!" Gosh he was tired of this. So tired that he ran up to the floating mask and tried to swat it out of the air, in hopes that it would just stop yelling.
As Skull Kid spoke, she heard it as her own voice. A sad, pathetic voice making excuses. "I didn't do anything!" the voice pleaded. "It's not my fault!"
Then she was struck by something. Wide-eyed, she glanced over at whatever hit her.
It was herself. This Smurf-colored Paula gazed down at her, eyes lifeless yet glaring daggers at the same time. "N-No..." she whispered. "It wasn't me..."
The blue Paula was awfully persistent. The blond never spent much time in front of a mirror, but to see her reflection like this... She didn't even know it was possible for her to look so angry.
But the illusion had a point. She kept repeating the same thing over and over again, yet nothing had changed. Why bother?
She reached over, an attempt to see whether the blue Paula was actually there or not, and quietly commented, "You shouldn't wear a face like that."

At least... it was someone that looked like Ness. The same hat. The same stripped shirt.
Except this Ness suddenly caught on fire. ("Fire, fire!" the children sang.) And yet there he still stood. The blue flames dancing around his body.
Paula screamed.
