Background:
Touhou WikiPersonality: Hina is the Goddess of Curses, which plays a large role in her character. Her ability to absorb curses from people and objects may seem like a dark ability, but Hina is an optimist. In the IOSYS song "Hincle Miracle", fans portray Hina as a cheerful girl who goes around and absorbs people's misfortunes. This is supported by the official description of Hina, where it's said that she does not want for humans to be misfortune and cursed. Hina actively looks to help people out by absorbing the bad things around them, and if she can, by pointing them in the right direction so that they may obtain happiness all on their own, without Hina's curse sponging.
Despite this happy use of her powers, Hina has no confirmed canon relationships. The only relationships she's suggested to have are with the Nagashi-Bina doll army, which Hina is said to lead, and possibly with Suwako-- as Suwako is said to have once led and tamed curse gods like Hina. This could be due to the fact that Hina is surrounded by curses, to the point that "Even those with no real spiritual experience can tell that she's surrounded by curses". Because of this, it is said that being around Hina causes other people bad luck and to feel "awful" and as if "The atmosphere is so heavy..." (quoted from Reimu), which likely results in a poor social life. This may explain why she seems to be so curious about the heroine during her in-game debut ("Is that some sort of spell?"). Due to her lack of social experience, Hina is drawn as being shy, yet still friendly and eager to talk to people when she can. She is, after all, "a friend of humans". Or so she claims.
As her duty is to guard the Youkai forest, and keep humans from entering the dangerous territory, Hina is also capable of becoming a bit creepy, and will use her collected curses to intentionally scare people. Even though she is a kind girl, Hina tries to scare people away from danger, seeming to think that this is the best way to protect them ("I was just trying to be nice and chase you away... "). Granted, her spinning tactics do not always succeed, and she will resort to forcefully beating them up and sending them away if the scare tactic fails. With Hina, it seems to go "Scare, Some Reasoning, Battle", as she does try to verbally get the heroines to leave before she attacks them.
Finally, despite having no confirmed relationships with other cast members, the fandom does seem to have built her a social circle. Hina is most comfortable around Nitori, a cute little kappa that appears after her in the game, perhaps due to how close their in-game appearances are and their reasons for attacking the heroine. In her relationship with Nitori, Hina seems to be very relaxed and happy, and shyly gives and receives affection. She is also frequently drawn with Chen (unlucky black cat) and Medicine Melancholy, and grouped with Sanae and her friends in some group shots.
Oh. And Hina spins. Spin, Hina, Spin. A gag that comes from the fact that her sprite spins around on screen. The kanji for "curse" also looks like a swirly, which might be her reason for twirling so much.
Abilities: Hina is a Curse Goddess. Her main ability is to absorb curses, usually from "Nagashi-bina dolls" (they're Japanese dolls that you put your bad luck in to). She also has quite a couple curses already absorbed, which means that she will eventually be unlucky to be around.
She also has a couple "spellcards". Though many of them are listed
here, from Mountain of Faith, and then there are two more in
Marisa' Grimoire. She also gets some new cards in
Double Spoiler.
The card descriptions for "Bad Luck Sign - Biorhythm of the Apotropaic God" ["This biorhythm can't be healthy at all for Hina. (Can dolls be unhealthy?)"] and "Evil Spirit - Misfortune Wheel" ["Will nothing go right for the cursed doll?"] also suggest that Hina is a doll.
