"People with good intentions often tell me we have an obligation to be "good stewards" of the earth. I must ask, who gave us this stewardship? Those who believe Genesis contains actual words spoken by God will say He gave us this stewardship when the earth was created, and I wouldn't dream of arguing with them. i can't stop the revolutions in my mind...can't get my head wrapped around giving up on the world venusiavix April 4 2005, 16:11:31 UTC
i'll have to disagree, and let me explain why. and at least this idea in me was not born of the bible.

we are surely dependant on the world...but i believe it is also the other way around. the world depends on the creatures (not only man, but all else that depends on it as well) for its life, just the same as we depend on it for our own lives. i do not adhere to the anthropocentric ideas on the matter, because to me man is no higher in ability or natural power than any other living creature. we all have the highest potential to influence the world for better or worse. our true obligation is not for stewardship, we are merely obligated to choose how we use our power to change the world in any way we decide.

right on. but the world is dependent on us now only because we are the ones who created it's problems and we are the only ones who can create the change to nurture Earth back to the way she was. pure change in thought changes reality ( ... )

the Earth doesnt depend on us, she just trusts us to make the right choices in regards to respect. She trusts that we fill ourselves with things we need to survive and not to let greed consume everything until there is nothing left. Its like biting the hand that feeds you OR like mother culture tricker treating at mother earth's door and stealing the entire basket of candy all for herself and then teasing the other poor children telling them they can have a piece only if they remain at her beck and call.

well, see...i guess i consider the world as the whole and we are all a part of the whole, but truly the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. so we both agree on that, that the world is more important than we are. what we disagree on i think is what the sum of our parts needs for survival in the greater whole of the world. we definately agree on what we do not need for survival...for example, greed and other negativity ( ... )
