I have been looking at places to do my PhD. My only problem is knowing where I am in the American university system, otherwise I might end up applying to places which I'll never get into, or places which aren't good enough

Hey Mir, you should contact Professor San Duanmu here at Michigan and ask him about phonetics and phonology programs in the US. His email is duanmu@umich.edu. Tell him you know me and I'm sure he'll be happy to relate to you lots of useful info.

I emailed him; he probably thinks I'm some kind of lazy moron though, it was very hard to make it sound like I just couldn't be arsed to look myself.

I told him my interests, what I aim to do after my PhD., what I aim to get in my undergrad and asked where this puts me in relation to the American education system. If he asks you if you told some weirdo to contact him...say yes...and if at all possible try and let him know I am not a complete idiot.
