Today (for the next half hour or so anyway) is the forty-ninth anniversary of the first broadcast of Doctor Who. One year, then, until the silly string and streamers come out for the Big Five-Oh. I think that's pretty damn spectacular for a sci-fi show with dodgy sets (though the sets have been better in NuWho). I'm planning to count down with

I *think* I saw William Hartnell, when he turned into Patrick Troughton, but those black and white memories are pretty dim; I was too young to really get it.
I have to go with Jon Pertwee, because he was dapper and knowledgeable and he had the Brigadier (shaky sets, repeat short lengths of corridor and that eternal quarry, not withstanding).
I liked Tom Baker and watched the whole of his tenure, but I never saw Peter Davison, Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy.
Paul McGann was just in the one, long episode, wasn't he? I saw it, but seem to remember being disappointed. Was that because it was not good, or was it the place I was in my life at the time? I don't know.
Christopher Eccleston was brilliant in the come-back and I could have as easily voted for him. David Tennant's doctor became far too human for my taste, but Matt Smith is good. I like his mix of serious and wacky.
But I guess, in the end, I have to go with my first, real Doctor.
