I was really upset learning of how some use the Koran to support female genital mutilation, since some of those that they interviewed said there was no support of that in the Koran, that it rather was an African tribal custom predating the Koran/islam.
I learnt that quite a few Christian communities practise this as well, as part of their religion, and yes in this Geographical area. As I understand it this tribal custom has transferred to the later religions, just like how they in South American have included the most odd spirits in Christianity.
Ack, it's really horrible that such a practice stays on in religious guises despite the mental and physical damage it does :/
In the docu above, they had a clip of a young girl screaming and struggling as other women restrained her, and did the deed... and of course, some highup (male) religious person interviewed that said this was why "other" women were not so nice and chaste (read: Western women deciding if and who they sleep with and perhaps marry).
The one religion I feel is most likable right now, is probably Buddhism, but I bet it has some skeletons in the closet as well.
